I love my upper level Clevelands (56, 60, and 64 degree). With the Nike L71 balls I use, I can get ~107yds with the 56 using full top spin; punches still stick, and take me down to 50yds with the 64. Under 50yds, I use avatar movements; same balls, punch with 64 yields ~45yds one avatar back, then 40, then 35 (averaged, depends on other variables, of course). Under 40yds, Flops start with 38yds for the 56 degree, right down to 20yds for the 64. Chip and pitch can be deadly IMO; these are the first wedges I felt quite confident using for those types of shots (typically with fbs).

    I'll say this:
I can play the ATV spin with me cleves,
but ATV users can't play my cleveland spin.

granted, ATV's are "safer", but cleves give you more power.
I can actually backspin a ball to climb uphill, now that's raw power :P
just need to know how to control and throttle it, and you're good.

    courteneyfish:

I think your main wedge problem Michael is that you only have 2 of them. 3 is the minimum you need on here. :-)

All of my clubs suck.  I'm just keeping all the info in mind for when I watch enough commercials and do enough surveys to figure it out.

I got both sets and play with the ATVs - far more manageable and allow for a gentle touch - which for me produces better results....those who prefer thrust and bang go for the clevelands

Both excellent clubs all down to personal choice IMHO.

For max versatility the Clevelands can play a variety of shots that no other wedges can BUT  it all depends on what you prefer.  I play regularly with a Tour Legend who uses the ATVs  because of the lower spin rate.  He is deadly with them since they fit how he wants to use them, with a bit more roll than brakes.  For me they are horrible, since I would rather throw the ball at the pin and have it stop dead where it hits without having to add full backspin and introducing another variable into the calculation.

I can spin my ATV's backwards up a hill too .... rarely have to use more than half spin with the ATV's and that only with extreme tailwinds. Rarely use much spin at all ... the thing I didn't like about the Clevelands was their tendency to back up more than you wanted with no spin applied whatsoever using 4 spin Nike balls. Both sets are good ...

I'm so used to the distances of the ATV's that it would cost me a lot of time and effort to relearn all over again with the set of Clevelands that are still in my inventory. I'll just keep the Clevelands until I have some spare time to "map" them.

    A couple of points.

Yes, I think to adapt to a new set of wedges would take time and effort. A free rental weekend is not long enough. Most people will only ever buy one set and therefore conclude that they have bought the best. I chose Cleveland and would dare not change as it would take me too long to adapt to a new set. However, I appreciate that both makes are on a par with each other.

My second point is about having three wedges. I have three wedges and did carry all of them in my bag. One replaced my hybrid. I think to start with it is good to have three wedges. I still have three, but now only carry two in my bag. The hybrid has come back. I use it when the yardage is imbetween the 3 iron and 3 wood. The 3 iron won't reach, but the 3 wood will go too far and won't hold the green. The hyrbrid can be bounced on, or backspin applied. It's also good for long shots out of the rough. On some courses I will use it on a long par 3. For those reasons I prefer to have it in the bag and play with two wedges.
