R11 love/hate vs L83 G20s...

  Those that would prefer forgiveness over precision, are the G's worth it?  Can I still score with them, or do they fail to stop?

  Not compared to the R11s....I know they don't spin similarly.  But, can I still hold enough greens.....or average better than 6yds on misses?

  I ask because distance control with the R11's is fabulous.  However, barely miss the ding (2mm-ish) and you can really sail out of birdie range.  I think I miss the forgiveness of the G20s more than I am taking advantage of the precision of Bladez and R11s.

  Think you answered it yourself really.  If you really want to compete the Bladez and R11s are more capable of consistently V good scores. The R11 set won't kill you like the Bladez would if you  miss the ding.....Have you tried deliberately missing the ding sometimes against the wind..........Also ry a few holes with starter balls before a game with better, and (if you are) don't touch the G20s for a week to really give teh R11s a go.  My 2cent

  Hitting off ding for wind means you have far less chance of hitting on wrong (downwind) side of ding.

  Outside of this forum the above sentence would be gobbledegook.Even inside....

  Hopefully one day they'll bring in an alternative to the R11 irons. Not necessarily better, just different.

  The R11's are the best... G20's and Bladz are very good too.

  I tried the Bladz and G20's when I was having trouble with the fast meter of the R11's... and found that they are good sets, but I gained a shot or two overall, compared to the R11's

  I think the Long distance Drivers off the Legend Tees is most important...  then whatever set of Irons you have doesn't matter....  well sought of... the better set is always good.

  The Bladz are a good set on Beth...  the ranges in the Irons are just about perfect for that course.

  I miss the ding frequently according to wind... adjusting aim and strength of shots.... takes a bit of practice (I've had plenty of that...lol), but it does work.

  R11's for me though :)

  same for me Chippo .. i still play the Bladez 's from time time .. awesome irons

  but R11's is where it's at for me 2 .. suppose using the lvl81 Nike helps with its 3 & half dots of feel .. the mtr speed for me between the R11 driver & R11 irons is virtually negligible using that ball ..

  also, i've never been able to hit off ding on either side with them .. i just go for ding .. when i miss it, it is what it is .. lol

  I suppose what I'm looking for is proximity to pin w/o going to a different ball.  And, when I miss, the R11s really punish me....making me wonder if it's worth it.  However, I'll admit my best scores come with them over the Bladez almost without fail.  It just seems so few and far between.  I just don't feel as consistent with them.  I'm either really good.....or very so-so.  And the putter can't save me from 18ft very often.

  I have tried to really concentrate on missing the correct side of the ding, and do notice that makes a huge difference in forgiveness.  I also use 1/2 bs (3/4 spin) to control those misses, except when I can hit an iron 95% instead of 92% by using full bs.

  Which brings up another sidebar.............. The R11s are so ridiculously precise.  I can now apply increments of spin to hit certain distances like I've never been able to do before.  I used to just hit full bs and choke the club to accomplish this.  Now, I can use both spin and choke to really zero in at times.  

  There is no doubt the R11s, if used properly, will make you a much better player.  I just wonder if I can now apply this knowledge to a different set of irons and achieve more consistency in my overall game?...

  This is asking for trouble. Partial swings with full bs and a missed ding will kill you in the deviation department. Lay off the extreme spin and use partial spin to control the distance by what it does to the rollout. The different wind directions affect this action very differently, too.

  For instance, a moderate wind in your face only needs partial spin on the ball to stop it. FBS gets you full effect of the wind influence there and it's hard to know consistently what that combo of spin and wind is going to do. A lot of the times you come up way short and are surprised. Think higher club with less spin and a choked swing.

  Conversely, with a helping wind bs is going to cause carry by virtue of the fact the ball is in the air longer and therefore subject to greater wind influence. It might stop when it gets where its going but the carry to get there changed.

  Spin can get you in a lot of trouble if you callously apply it without really thinking of how the ball/wind combo affects the shot. Ever notice how back spin and wind direction are related? The backspin on landing goes in the direction of the wind. That consistency you relish will come when you stick with one setup and learn it inside and out. The R11s are the top irons and are lethal if you take the time to really learn them. IMO, you're hurting yourself trying to master multiple sets.

  Awesome advice YJ which is why a month ago I started using the shorter club and rolling it up to the hole rather than trying to play darts.

  All this talk about the R11's makes me want them even more.  I've been doing ok with the RocketBladez but the miss dings are an absolute killer for me right now.  Some rounds I can't ding any approach shot and end up with constant 15 foot putts or more for birdie which means I'm left with a bit of work.  I've noticed missing into the wind helps a lot, but I don't like to do that on purpose as if I try to do that I'll miss by a foot and cut 20 yards off my shot.  I hope the R11's are a bit better on the forgiveness than these Bladez.

  I've been using the highest spin Nike balls on these Bladez for a while and while it kills my drive distance, I feel it helps me stop a bit more like the R11's when I need it to.  I can't imagine having less stopping power and going for the G20's.  Courses like Whisler with the huge uphill elevated greens I still feel I don't have enough stopping power.
