but i've always used full- to almost full spin on all approaches

I used to too, but at the time shied away from the heavier wind RG's...now a lot more top spin and punch shots, make for closer bird putts.

Got to agree with MB, sometimes the club thats just short will get you there with topspin and is more accurate than choking back the next club up.

I was wondering how is the yardage affected wen using a punch shot across the fairway within 100 yards then with in 200 yards like do I have to add more? or wen are the best times to use it? other then wen tree in way of course plz elaborate anyone?

I only use punch shots with my wedges with the appropriate distance (select punch on your wedge to see) or if I am in the rough 40-50% burried and depending on the distance.  Further shots, I usually go up two clubs lengths when I'm 160yds or futher (but that doesnt mean you hit it full still) and 90% of that time is all top spin.

I'm still "learning" the punches with my irons, and currently am only accurate to punching down to my 8 iron from the fairway...

But say hitting into a 15 MPH wind with a 100 yard Cleve wedge, I'll put 80-90% to top spin, playing 100 yards out, ball will be hole high,

Say in heavy winds like at SA...95 out, I'll punch the PW (103) with no spin (into wind) will leave me right around the hole..sure the Cleve might get there, but a mis hit with it is worse than a miss hit PW punch.

This is what I'm getting a LOT out of from this thread.

If you ask Chris, I like to play various shots into greens, too.  Stop some.  Run some up a little.  Just whatever feels like it has the smallest margin of error and the highest reward simultaneously.  He used to give me a lot of crap about playing a yard or three in rollout until he realized I could consistently do it.  But, that was up to the L59 Gs.

Since, I've gone much more to throwing darts.  And, my game hasn't felt the same.  I'm a better player, but this is likely the inconsistency with a lot of my rounds.  Definitely something I need to work more on as I figure out these irons.  I'll likely stick with the R11s for awhile longer for sure.  The original question was about which would be more consistent with missing dings and scoring.  But, it sounds like both sets will be....

I just need to learn all the spin combos of the R11s.  And, the R11s will still have some firepower in reserve when I need it over the G20s.  Sort of like learning to caress a billiard ball into the side pocket instead of just ramming straight away shots at the back of the pockets.

lol .. i deny it all of course ..

guess it comes down to the style of play that one is most comfortable with .. you know i'm a bspin junkie .. just works for me when i'm on song.

Not that i always use full back all the time .. i do play some shots where i take a little off if i need to reach a bit & roll
