In this third part of this weekly series, I would like to address the topic of "Keeping It In Play".

For you new players out there, this term is also used in the real golf as well.

It basically means to try and keep your ball from tee shot to green from going off course to make par or better. Staying out of rough, sand traps,  & other hazards. You will not avoid them entirely and that is where your "Short Game" comes into play & is the second most important aspect of the game; first is of course putting. And this is all encased into the "Course management" part of the game. It's mostly a mental challenge as you progress from tee to green. Knowing where to drive your 1st shot to making your approach shot on the green. This includes  compensating for the wind ,elevation, obstacles, hazards, players already on the fairway.

Hopefully the seasoned players will respond to this post as they did in the past; with some very valuable tips all.

    Thank You

    Joe

Before you figure out where to land the ball, think about what club you'd like to be swinging, the shot you want to use and from where.

For instance, if you're really confident with a full 64W shot, hit to where you can use it. Don't forget to look at the wind from the landing spot of your shot to the green and how it will affect that shot. No sense laying up to a specific yardage only to discover it has wind help from there.  :-)

When possible , take hazards out of play . If you can avoid doing so , play around the bunkers , and away from the water . I have found , that at least 70-80% of the time , shots will bottom out , when playing over the water , or bunkers. So dont play hard , play smart .Happy Swinging :-)

I can't imagine that bunkers would be helpful in many situations, but at Oakmonts 9th...

It's a great little program called SNAGIT John. The link will take you to a download webpage where you can get a 30 day free trial. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Thanks very much for the comment  : )

Jeez, I have snagit10, had it for ages, but only use it for screenshots, just hit the orange bar at top of screen and all in one, done, produces a much smaller file than PrntScrn does.

I'm gonna love it even more now....

I'll tell ya a better way to play #9 at Oak, I played with Covenant once and he showed me.

Lay up 30 yards short on the fairway, not fringe, and if u have a reliable 30 yard shot then with no spin 3 feet left of hole is ur aim.

    Guaranteed 4.
