I've managed to get to Legend but I don't think I have ever birdied 9 at Oakmont. In fact I bogey many more times than par. Anyone with tips on how to play that hole, especially with the pin short and right (as I seem to find it mostly), I would be most grateful.

Put it the front bunker, play you bunker shot three yards short and left of the hole for a short  par putt.  Birdies here are very uncommon and I play for par here.

You could try upgrading your irons to the Rocketbladez, or in one more level, the r11's, which will give greater distance and stopping power. That being said, a better shot would be one less club than you think you need with about half back spin. The increased height trajectory will land the ball at a steeper angle, which helps keep it from rolling on up above the hole. But like the previous poster said... if the situation still looks impossible, there's still the bunker option. The G-20's don't stop well on Tournament or Championship speed greens, nor do they have the distance you need now, or the trajectory. Hope that helps.

if you don't have the conditions to land it over the bunker, pitch and run it short left

I just went and tried it and this seems a good method.

Always a tricky approach shot @ Oakmont #9.

Bunker is defo an option - sometimes it pays to be brave though

All of the above is great advise. Advise I never listened to until just recently.

If you dont feel confortable with the club in hand for this approach just lay up and take the par. Playing an under powered club on this hole can be trouble.

    Timbo is right.

The second shot here (and I assume we are talking about the short right pin) is all about where you are hitting from and what the conditions are.

If you have a slight wind into you then you can take a shot at the pin, I've birdied it a number of times that way.  If you have a wind behind you, generally you are done.  If you land short of the pin on the downslope it goes long and you have a difficult putt to get down in two.  Short of the bunker or in the bunker are not tough pars.
