Does anybody know how to play the par 3 17th at Kiawah.

I keep going in the water. I'm losing ball after ball. I can't afford to keep losing Nike balls lol.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Jason.

    Don't go in the water.

The correct shot involves either your 3 or 4 iron-the wind determines that. I will either choke a fbs 3i or use ts with a 4i. I use Callaways, though, so your results might vary but one of those 2 clubs is what you should be using. And DO NOT miss the ding on the wrong side of a l to r wind-automatic ball lost.  :-)

To be serious - I have noticed recently that if you miss the ding these days you seem to get punished somewhat more than in the past. Maybe I'm imagining that.

If you happen to miss wrong side of wind you're struggling for par.

And I'm not talking about wild ding misses either. A couple of millimetres and you are talking about 20 foot plus putts.

    And I concur with Jim.

One hole you simply need to ding for a reasonable result. You're playing off a tee remember, so you need to be a little off the yardage that it shows.

I went through a period of playing it a lot. When you do that it becomes like a CTTH hole. You get a feel of what club, what to choke and the touches of spin to add. Hard to get it inside 10 feet though.

    Thanks Peter and Jim.

All good advice. I don't play it that much, usually concentrate on the front nine. Last couple of times have been in the water and ended up double bogey. I don't like to be beaten, so I'm determined to master it.

    Thanks.

A tip, ?a great tip?, against losing balls is a dozen putt strokes from the tee. Ball stays dry, I swear!

Other than that, it's not so difficult IMHO except in strong left-to-right wind. Fear of water may create bunker practice ;)

The only advice I can give here is not to start a round on the back nine at Kiawah until your ball wear has just gone red, then by the time you get to the 17th it'll be just about dead and it won't hurt so much if you lose it. Other than that, aim for the bunkers.

I don't like Kiawah on here due to the mapping of the greens, but 17 is one hole that I like. As Jim said a 3-4 (often less depending on wind) Iron for me gets there comfortably, but my advice is to hit a little long and left to ensure you avoid the lake. DONT miss the ding to the right - even light l-r breeze is trouble.

The back pin in strong winds is tougher.3 iron or even 3 wood but again long and left is OK - a easyish up and down.

Last tip - forget the water is there, half the battle is won.

For the front pin, I like to hit a club with no more than 1/2 BS and have it land in front of the bunker on the left. There's a rise in the ground so it takes some of the energy off the shot and it bounces the ball right toward the pin. If playing in heavy wind I play for a par and don't get cute or greedy. Hitting long behind the pin works 100% of the time or bail left short of the green if it's a bad "ding" day.

The back pin is mostly a choked down 3W with full BS wind adjusted.

The best advice I have overall is don't bet your last credits on the hole. Just get out clean and move along.
