In a nutshell, wedges and a driver.

First, I bought two L38 ATV wedges, a 60 and a 64.  I considered the Clevelands, and I'm sure they're fine, but I liked the distances a little better on the 64 TaylorMades (50 instead of 60). They've made a HUGE difference.  Even with mediocre balls, they throw darts at the green.  And high winds have almost no effect on them.  At a minimum, get 2 wedges to replace the sand and lob that come with your starter set.

And today, just after I hit level 58, I bought the G20 driver.  I was really struggling with longer holes after turning Tour Pro.  I considered the K15 because of it's price and slow meter speed, and at 250 yards would have been a huge upgrade over the starter, but I wanted that extra 20 yards from the G20.  It will carry me much further in the game, so I didn't see the point in spending 1100 on the K15 when the G20 is just 400 more.

I just played my first round with both the wedges and the driver, and it was like I was playing a different course.  On the first hole at St. Andrews, I hit the new driver, then dropped a 60 degree wedge shot within a few feet and drained it for a bird.  I shot 67,  my best round to date.  And that included a couple of putts that I should have made, but I'm still somewhat timid on the faster greens after blasting a few putts 25 feet past the hole in a recent tournament.

Anyhoo, if you're still using the starter set, consider upgrading these 3 clubs.  I know, they cost "money", but I got around that by buying 2 domain names at Go Daddy for $3.99 each.  They have to be your first domain purchases, but for $8, I got 3,000 credits, which would normally cost $30.

Now, if I could only find an affordable golf ball that performs well ...

You made some good choices. When you make the master tier you'll probably need a 3rd wedge and to drop the hybrid but you probably won't need to buy anything else until then. I'd recommend the TourSD ball if you want to keep costs down or a Srixon if you want to spend a little more. Good luck.

A good putter helps a lot too, as does a putter pal, either home made and stuck on your computer display, bought from WGT, or some other source.

Thanks, I did quite a bit of reading before spending any credits.  My first thought was to get a driver and a better putter, but based on what I read in the forums, the best sequence appears to be wedges-driver-irons-3 wood-putter.  A 3rd wedge is definitely on the short list, but I want to pair that buy with new irons so I can get good spacing between the new PW and that 3rd wedge.  The ATV 56 is 93 yards and the 54 is 98 yards, and that's enough difference for me to wait for the irons.

I bought a pack of 180 Srixons last night.  All my decent balls were pretty worn down, so I needed to buy something and gave them a try.  Pretty good ball, but I'll check out the TourSD ball too.  I get the feeling it's an endless search for most players trying to balance performance with the relatively high cost.  Thanks for the recommendation.

This is the advice everyone should take before Club Upgrades. Smart thinking and it will pay off in the long run. I read as many posts on Club Upgrades and player equipment reco's as I could before putting out credits. The best thing about this site is the top players  freely giving good advice and council on the forums for all to use.

    I'll add one.

Anyone bought the top end Max Meter irons and prefer them over the R11s?

I see you get more forgiveness and a slower meter at the expense of spin and a little distance. Not so bothered by the distance TBH.

I would only buy at that price if they are a long term replacement not a bag swap in and out. If you get my drift.

The 3wood should be the last on your order of priority until you get to legend.

The R1 driver at level 48should be purchased as soon as available. it will carry you until you reach legend.

The two MAX Spin wedges I have (75yd,90yd) are the best clubs I have. No spin needed, if you do, just move the dot down juuuuuuuust a millimeter = LAWN Darts. I find myself laying up sometimes just to have my ball be in range for these clubs.

The taylor made 50yd wedge is nice. I use it because its easy to calculate distance with it.  I also know that if I use full back-spin, to add 10% to the power needed to reach yur desired distance.

I personally think putter should be high on the list.  I like the 10yd percision scale for those <10yd big breaking putts that i struggled with using the 30yd wgt putter. that putter kills you on downhill putts.
