My 5 month laser optical mouse lately is putting out a weaker signal. It seems so because sometimes on the backswing it will click before I actually click the button, and more than a few times it will click on the downswing, to count the stroke. I had to withdraw from a few tourneys for this and that I will not stand for.
I tried different surfaces, no change.

Yes I've tried the 3 click meter but I still have to hold and maneuver the mouse for aiming shots. And sometimes the mouse cursor won't move when I click and hold.
Outside of WGT, sometimes I have copy/paste issues because it won't highlight consistenly.

    Time for a new mouse?

Did you ever clean the sensitive area, the "red light district"?

Is it by chance a wireless mouse? Battery issues?

No battery, there is a wire.

Checking the light, looks normal while flat. Maybe I just don't see it flicker.

Frequently I find hair and dust around the sensor - cats in the house!

As alosso says, the optical sensor in the bottom of the mouse picks up dust particles and then it can't track its movement correctly. Get yourself an artists paintbrush, small enough to poke through the hole in the bottom of the mouse and gently brush the surface of the optical sensor then, preferably with an aerosol air duster, blow the sensor clean.

    I do only this,

    ScottHope:
    blow the sensor clean.
    with my breath.

I use the "canned" compressed air.  Great advice Scott!

Just an idea. Have you checked to see if the cable is seated correctly? Vibrations from Fans can cause some cables to come loose. They look like they are still seated properly but looks can be deceiving.
