    alosso:

While there is a flag of Ireland, I wonder what makes the difference - in international views - between Scotland and Guernsey, England and the Isle of Man, Wales and Jersey?

Why are the former united under one flag?

The Isle of Man isn't part of the UK or the EU, nor are the Channel Islands as far as I know.

I'm just curious, no pun or offence intended.

Wikipedia's list of sovereign states shows only the UK as a main entry, mentioning all the countries which are in discussion here and their relation to it.

Apparently, common ground to Jersey, Guernsey and the IOM is their status as crown dependencies, internationally represented by the UK government (e.g. in the UN). Despite of their partial sovereignty it seems a bit arbitrary to me to set them separate in the country list.

OTOH, the UK is the body covering the three others plus Northern Ireland, whether they like it or not.

    Now, let the chastisement begin.

No need for that:)...A worthwhile point of order:

The British Isle is a commonly accepted geographical area.

The UK is a formal political union.  This is not though the place to open up which parts of what want in, and which parts of what would prefer out.

Then (not least) there are the Crown Dependencies which govern themselves, and have their own parliament which is why they are not represented in the UK (London) Parliament. The Crown is distinct from the overall Constitution (parliament chopped the Kings Head off remember). These dependencies are however afforded protection and such by the Crown.  They are not overseas territories, but I will leave that bit alone.

EDIT: Should have also referred to the Commonwealth. This is a much loser arrangement for these high level purposes, but it is distinct from any of the above (mostly).

Basically people want their own flag why not?

I guess I should be upset that I can't choose from a Michigan state flag.

LOL - ask me about the Bavarian flag! (1)

Apparently, WGT has picked up (?rather than create themselves?) a certain list of states and flags which may leave one or more questionable points outside of this discussion (Antarctica...).

As far as I know them, they won't change anything lightly. Only factual moves may cause a change, e.g. the Scottish referendum next year. Thus the recurring demands most certainly will remain fruitless.

    (1) Instead, I show the Scottish saltire in the back window of my car ;)

A German friend of mine insists he is Bavarian.  Bit like a Brit insisting he is English or Welsh kind of thing I guess?  Must ask him next time we have a beer.

BTW I originate from the English county of Essex.  They have a flag ton and I would like that one please:)
