Sadly, in the quest for more money, not only have the WGT devs made this game ridiculously expensive, they've also made it ridiculously arcade-like.  The winning scores in those 2010 virtual opens were 61-63 at Oakmont (BolloxInBrugues) and 59-63 at St Andrews (AvatarLee).  The winning score in 2013?  55-57 at Merion (Kriztjan).

I have always said that because this is a puter game...  ya just take 10 shots off the scores the real golf Pro's are shooting.

Now the real pro's are shooting low 60's with the latest clubs and balls... the best players on Wgt are shooting in the low 50's with the latest clubs and balls.

3 yrs ago there was no difference...  with the clubs and balls available to us all to use at the time.

I liked your spreadshhet though....  very interesting reading.   One thing,   you need to change the Daytona Spyder putter to Daytona Rossa

Reals pro's sometimes shoots par-10 or better on 18 holes course. Here on WGT we see all time par-12 on 9 holes course.

WGT is a game. Like FPS where you can die as many time you want. In real war you'll die only once.

Video game, IRL you dont go out heavy rough which is not 50% lie but 500% lie with weed over your knees.

Thanks for the comments... but It's not actually my spreadsheet so I can't go in and change it.  The original poster of that Pro Shop Chart is nivlac: http://www.wgt.com/forums/t/6927.aspx

I'd also like to point out that the winning score in the real life US Open this season was 281 (+1) for four rounds... meaning that the winning score in the Virtual US Open was actually 14.25 strokes better per round than the real life counterpart...

In any case, I think we can both agree that it's terrible how $40 has gone from being able to buy you a full top-tier club set to only just being enough for the new Everybody's/Hot Shots Golf-esque Nike irons...

We can individually make the game more life like and less expensive by not buying the best irons or balls. When they have free rental weekends I rent the R11 irons and laugh at the way the game plays. It's totally unrealistic and silly looking. That's why I won't buy those irons or use the top Nike balls. I've found a combination that looks more realistic for my own enjoyment. Can't compete at the top level but I don't care. I'd rather the game look more realistic than just play darts with 3 irons. We all have the power to make the game what we want it to be at our own monetary level. What others do is up to them. If WGT came out with a set of irons at $500 that made the hole 3 foot around, people would buy them. ;)

Seriously?  $20 or $30 for a single virtual driver?  $2 per ball at the high end?  It's a nice game and everything, but you are nuts to expect people to spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on a video game.

I was thinking the same thing, been practicing like crazy, I'm hooked, I'm new, but started cruising around the site, found the forums and the pro shop.

Holy freaking cow is equipment ever expensive, but i guess i need to slow down my playing and start watching some videos, i tried a couple of the offers, they seem to be a scam not 1 payed the credits, the videos have all paid so far but after an hour of videos I made 33 credits, went to the pro shop and found I need about 50,000 more hours of videos to get anything.

I think the site is economically challenged.

I'm able to pay, but in looking around I'm afraid my money will be stolen and I hear WGT will close my account if they deem me a double account holder or something like that. I'm not clear there whats going on, but I'm afraid to put any money here if they just will close my account.

Why is there so much chatter on the net that they close peoples accounts after they spent money, it make no sense to me.

What exactly have I stumbled on here? Am I missing something or making something out of nothing. Just a little confused and trying to be an educated consumer.

Those complaints come from customers stating that two played over one IP address - two PCs, router, common set-up. Relatives, online friends, equipment transfer, difficult to separate from multi-account cheaters. False positives may be hit.

In these cases, some fear may be justified.

I for one play alone and I've enjoyed the game for two years now. I've been reluctant in spending money and I still play my first full custom set with mid-performance balls. Spendings are around 20 $ per month, with peaks when new clubs were due.

And if you compare spending 30, 50 or 100 bucks here to other leisure activities, it's quite a reasonably priced entertainment. Of course, you need more when going for competition success and credits. Alas, IMHO, this is not a gambling site but a fun&gaming site.

And I still adore the views...

I agree, I put in about $50 every 2 months and I have probably spend $10 on myself the last couple of months as I have hardly played. But at $25 per month that is damned good value IMO - quite seriously, what entertainment can you get for that price these days?

Since I made legend I have pretty much used the Callys, but as I seldom play now, reverted to the Nikes. Before Legend I used Tour SD balls and  occasionally  the Srixons.

But I  solely  play for fun, not for credits, but as with most things in life, where there is money, there will always be a level of exploitation. So simple thing is buyer beware.

LOL Paul - me too, I love the finish of the hole and the panned view, I constantly play "Wheres Wally" - looking for aspects of the courses I have not seen before.

Ok I have said enough before I get the the men in white coats coming back!

As has been stated there are various ways you can play this game, from playing with starters to earning credits for better equipment.

I've always paid for the equipment, but my spending curve has decreased now I'm on level 93. I didn't keep changing clubs. I stayed for as long as I could with the starters, then moved to G20s and didn't  change them unitl I made Legend. Only ever had two putters.

So yes, initial outlay can be expensive, but when you get to a high level there is not that much you can buy. I'm on level 92 and there is nothing I want or need. Sometimes the R1 keeps coming in at level 93, but I keep missing that at the moment.

I do use Nike (lvl 71) balls, but as has been said before, think of it has a combined green fee and ball charge.

WGT is a business and I realise they have to make money. I'm only having to pay for the golf balls, so for me it's worthwhile to get the ones I consider to be the best, to get the most enjoyment out of this game.

Many ways for WGT to make the money they needs for team salaries and others outcomes.

One thing sure, we Europeans cant get free crédits as north americans peoples. Talking with friends from New World, they get 500 a week minimum, when the goods months we can get half of this.

More that, lost half an hour for 125 credits on survey ... Wéééé ev1 do he want, but at work win 1 € by minute.

Anyway, we have Euro which not a monkey monay as USD, so we can pay a few. (lol).

So balls pricing is not honnest, pay near more for virtuals balls than reals balls ... it's a joke. Clubs pricing is right IMO.
