Len:just don't buy them if you choose not to. if wgt did not make any money they would go out of business and none of us could enjoy anymore! the game is totally free(if you choose). they do not make you buy anything, even the balls are free! what more do you want? all money spent is voluntary. i have seen great players with starter clubs and balls. nobody is "ripping" you off.
