Well, I guess I was the straggler in R3, the last one out on the course scratching my head as I puzzled out how on earth to try and make par on the next challenging hole I came to. Now I know why they call this Best of Hardest... even without these conditions I struggle to get by in anything like par, so this was a fabulous test.
I was delighted with myself for parring the 1st (BPB's #15), having realized that the secret to making par on some of the holes with these glass greens is ... wait for it... not to try and make birdie!
I managed to play Faldo-esque par golf through the front 9, even finding that sometimes getting an enormous headwind made par more likely for me, as I had no choice but to lay up for a wedge approach (a better option IMO than a long putt).
But I hit trouble on the back 9, bogeying St A's #4, CCC #4, and making a total mess of RSG #9 (missing the fairway off the tee by a yard or two, but getting horrible sidehill lie and opting to punch out, the first of 4 misjudgments en route to an ugly double).
I had at least half a dozen putts that might have dropped on a different day, but only one 3 putt, and overall, I'm delighted to have even threatened par for a round that might well have the biggest challenge ever seen on WGT. A 75 was my final score.
Thanks again for this great tourney!
(For future 'craziness' events, icon, I'd actually vote NOT to have rounds be 24 hrs apart: for one thing, I'm not sure I can take the punishment that often! I actually like them spread out; it gives time to watch how the leaderboard develops and soak in player's feedback in the thread, and to let the anticipation or trepidation take effect... Also having them run 12 days makes each one more of a special event. I'd hate to see a saturation of these non-stop for a few weeks, and then to have them die out.)
