    1 August,

This is a special post for a historic figure born on this date ... I'm going to play a song here that was written by John Stafford Smith around 1760 for the Anacreon Society ... a Gentlemen's club of barristers, doctors and other professionals.

I'm certain many of you will know the tune, while very few will know the lyrics.

Can you guess what popular song uses the tune of this song?  If you can, and you know the author of this song, it's his birthday today!   (is this a form of musical plagiarism?)

Me thinks the Star Spangled Banner.. I thought the author was Francis Scott Key, not so sure now though.  :) Good one Kat!

For all you "Deadhead" fans, today is Jerry Garcia's (1942 - 1995) birthday.  While LJ mulls over his special request here's one from the Jerry Garcia band ...

And now, many of you remember this actor.  Dom DeLuise (1933 - 2009) ... here he is in the movie "Blazing Saddles"  (no offense to those of the gay persuasion intended) ...

Blues Guitarist and singer Robrert Cray is 61 today.  Here's a great tune done by Robert Cray ...

The lead singer for the band, Def Leppard ... Joe Elliott is 55 today.

And the lead singer for Counting Crows, Adam Duritz turns the dreadful five-oh today.  Here's one of my favorite Counting Crows tunes ...

I'm back at the grind starting Monday ... but it's POETS day today!  I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

LJ ... send me some requests ... I don't know too many GD tunes!

You're correct ... Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner ... however it was originally titled "Defence of Ft. McHenry".

As a member of the Anacreon Society, I guess this tune was stuck in his head as he sat and watched the barrage as a temporary captive on the British ship, the HMS Minden.

The following morning, Key started the poem on the back of an envelope he was carrying in his pocket, then later concluded it at "The Indian Queen Hotel" in Baltimore.

He used many phrases from an earlier poem he had written, titled "When the Warrior Returns" ... which can also be sung using the same tune.  Francis Scott Key wasn't much of the composer many think he was.  I seriously don't think he wrote an original tune in his life!
