So there I was... trying and failing to get any kind of worthwhile start over the first half dozen holes of the Transamerica Classic, and hating myself for restarting when...
... I decided, forget it, I'm going to play with Starter Clubs instead...
... and, since it seemed appropriate, I loaded up the free Transamerica ball for the round.
Well, I had a really fun time. Playing Starters from the tips at CCC was a real, solid challenge. Some birdies were possible, many holes required good wedges or up'n'downs to save par... in short it was a great test, and one in which par would be an excellent score but where several under is not impossible. Obviously, using a ball with 2.5 distance and 2 spin, and a slower meter (2) than the starter 'rock' ball (0 everything!) makes it a lot more manageable.
So then I thought how about a Parallel WGT Virtual Tour for Starter clubs using this exact premise...
The special ball that is given out free with these tournaments is always one of 'middling attributes' -- enough to encourage a newbie to realize what a difference a good ball can make, but not with enough distance, spin, or meter slowness, to be worth anything much to the highest-level players, except as fish food.
Typically, I suspect, these balls just end up clogging up the bag for most of us… Instead, why not put them a real functional use: make them the required ball for an equipment-restricted parallel event, one in which every player would then be using exactly the same gear (something that so many players have asked for).
Shoe has been experimenting with Starter-only events in recent months (e.g. As Promised... More Starter Club Tests), and they've been very warmly received.
This would be a logical extension. Create a tournament, indeed, a whole tour, that puts these balls to good use.
The durability attributes appear to be enough to allow for at least 2 full rounds (even with a score somewhat over par). That would be enough to allow a competitor to play both rounds in the parallel tourney without needing to spend credits if they didn't want to. And if a player did buy more of that ball, then there would be some transparency in their Profile (if anyone cared to look) to reveal if they'd purchased more sleeves of said ball in order to grind their way to a good score.
Some obvious Benefits:
1. The sponsor gets more exposure, as the balls carrying their name would get more use, and be purchased more. And it would be appropriate: their ball would be used in their tourney (which I'll bet it isn't by anyone currently featuring on the leaderboard of the main event!).
2. WGT gets more ball sale income, as some players would inevitably buy another sleeve of said balls in order to have another crack at a lower score in the multiple play first round.
3. The playing community gets a truly level playing field event, that would also give newer or lower level players (without the top club sets) a chance to see how they fare on leaderboards with some of the top names.
4. Top players get a chance to have some fun with the variety of a starters event.
I'd be happy to maintain Tour Standings for these events, if WGT couldn't repeat the existing Virtual Tour standings programming for a parallel version.
… and if WGT really wanted to offer a hard-core version, and really see if anyone could break par, they could throw Uneven Lies into the mix as well!
Any thoughts... ?

And yes, I did finish the round, bogeying the last for a one over 72:
For bragging rights, anyone else want to try and break par playing the multiplay Transamerica Classic with starters and the tranny ball before Friday's deadline? You'd have to post your card and club set/ball/score screenshot on the 18th green as I've done above.
