CerinoDevoti: Good luck to anyone that takes this challenge on with the starter clubs.
I tackled it last night CD, and was stunned to come away with a 75 :)
The Strike Out Als Challenge at Legend level is played from the tips, with Mod winds and Champ greens. With the starter set there are several holes where I couldn't reach the first fairway/green off the tee (e.g #3,#4,#5,#6,#14,#18), but there are enough short holes to give one hope of compensating birdies.
And, I agree with Cerino, the Champ greens make this a severe test with the starter putter (but I managed to avoid a 3-putt, hooray!)
On #2 I had a great chance for birdie, but went long with 3H 3rd, and pulled a 12ft downhiller from beyond the hole. Went past hole again on 2nd to par 3 3rd, and missed very tricky 9ft downhill curler. When I went long on a SW for 4th shot to the 4th I thought the round was headed for a train wreck, which seemed certain after being just short of perfect on 3rd into #5 and then failing to get up and down and carding double there.
From #7 on though was the stretch of holes where you have to take advantage. I made a nice 16ft bird from short of the 7th, missed a great 9ft chance on #8, and missed the green on #9. But on #10 got this highlight of the round: 30ft birdie after missing the fairway left and having to play out to the right. Messed up my approach to #11 (another realistic birdie chance hole), but played the 12th beautifully for par: tee shot just made it to first fairway, hit perfect 3W 2nd to thread the gap and roll up onto high side of green, then caught a perfect lag from 71ft. Was very happy to walk away with par there!
Another poor tee shot on #13 ruined possible birdie hole, and made bogey on #14 after slight push on 3rd approach. But #15 was another heroic par, sinking 4.5ft save after another good lag from long on the green. My favorite shot of the round was approach to #16, where I figured I could make up for lack of stopping power of the starter 3W by playing long and rolling back: it worked out very nicely and left 6ft bird. Great save on #17 after rolling back off green with tee shot and playing bad flop, took me to #18 looking for single bogey to match Cerino's 74. However, I just missed the attempted 8 iron to the front tee, didn't reach the fairway even from there, and was headed for a sad double to close.
As usual, the secret to a good score with these challenges is limiting the damage.
Here's my card (and closing chip-view club-hover greenshot as proof of Starter clubs):
