Idea for parallel Starters Virtual Tour

  Had some fun with my L10 Tour Starter Clubs and used the free green ball(Tour GI-SD) I got on St Patti's Day. My "Golden Clubs" are my favorite set by far. The Starters are a heck of a lot of fun and the "Fancy Clubs" are nice but these sticks perform extremely well for what they are. So I played the Wk 12  9 Hole Free Weekly Single Play on CCC. Legend Tier has No Wind. Shot a 34 with some pretty bad putting. CCC is a great course to hit from the tips with short clubs and still get around without a lot of problems. I figure if I putted perfectly, I could have shot 32 or even 31 really.

  The only highlight of note was a 27 foot putt for birdie on 9 after playing too conservative with my approach. I suppose my tee shot to 2 feet on 7 was pretty sweet as well. Otherwise a nice little 9 hole round for fun. Wish it was unlimited play and I didn't notice until after I finished. The tale of the tape.....

  I managed 79 today, tackling it mostly in an experimental frame of mind, so taking more risks than was prudent. It shows in my card: I somehow made 5 birdies but didn't take notice of CD's advice above, that what really saves a score here is limiting the damage on holes that you can't realistically par. 

  I had to try again, lol!

  I really enjoy this particular challenge. Every hole is a test, with enough possible birdie chances to help offset the truly hard holes where bogey is the best one can hope for.

  This time around I managed +6, ironically enough going to the other extreme, with only 1 bird, but no doubles or worse.

  I had a 13ft birdie chance on #1 after this 2nd, pulled my 3rd on #2, and messed up my distances in coming in to #4. Add in a missed putt on #8, and leaving a long come-back putt short on #9, and I was +4 at the turn (but believing that those 4 strokes could have been saved). On the back though, I played almost perfect golf given the clubs and conditions: an unlucky bounce forward from the fringe on #10 cost a birdie possibility, but I made the bird on #11. On #12 I sunk this snake of a downhiller for par (how many different breaks does this putt have?). A stupid miss ding putt on #13 lost me the last realistic birdie chance, and a misjudged approach to #14 led to inevitable bogey there. On #15 I had another great downhill save, while on #16 I had enough tailwind to just reach the rough short of the green and make a simple flop save par. Having crashed through the bank of weeds short of the green last time on #17, I decided to play to the right rough, trying to leave a 40-odd yard shot with the most green to work with, but the tee shot flew 219 into some wind, and bounced forward into the bunker! This great escape should have meant par, but I pushed the 5ft putt wide. On the last, I did find the front tee this time, but couldn't come up with a matching approach shot, as my 3H came in too high and stopped in the green front hill, so it was only a bogey to finish.

  I'm going to keep trying this one... I'm sure I can get ever closer to par one of these days!

  I played the Monthly Unlimited on St Andrews with all starter gear today. Legend tier has No Wind so I figured it was as good a chance as any to play ok. I think I did pretty good for one time through until the 18th hole. I hit long on the green and had a 6 footer for par. I missed the damn thing and ended up all pissed off. Nearly punched a hole in the monitor. 3 putting the last hole of an 18 hole round just kills me. Anyway, here's the card and stats. Shot a 77. The great putters could par the course in these conditions.

  You can tell I played it with no restarts because I par'd the first hole. ;)

  I tried Cabo with all starter gear in the Wk 13 18 Hole Single Play and the course plays beautifully. Had Moderate Wind in Legend Tier and it's pretty tame. The fairways can all be reached off the tees so it becomes a putting game once you reach greens in 2 or 3 shots. The par 3's aren't that hard either. If I could putt like the better players, this can be done in under par. I made enough mistakes to know the best could easily shoot perhaps -3. With Single play and no experience using the little sticks I shot a handy 75. Good luck folks and I hope some others play it just for the fun. It's really pretty cool actually.

  Today I tried the Wk 13 9 Hole Oakmont Unlimited Play. Legend Tier has No Wind so I knew the Course couldn't put up much of a fight. I loaded up my Golden Clubs(L10 Tour Starter Gold Full Set and WGT GI-S Ball) and had at it. The round went pretty darn well. I played my usual conservative manner to keep it simple and not blow up any hole. I missed a birdie chance on 14 from being over-conservative on my approach. Made it through 15 with a very nice par putt to keep myself level par. At 17 I pulled the trigger and went for a close approach and it paid off. Finally a birdie knowing going to 18 I would need one to pad my score if Level par was going to happen. Bogeys can happen on 18 with any set of clubs. Nice drive, perfect lay up and an approach of a stupid chicken. Too afraid to go long meant ending up 39 feet under the hole way uphill. Well, I made the stupid thing and played Oakmont B9 from the tips with a 34 and no bogeys on the card. First time that has happened from the tips with the little sticks on Oakmont for me. I know the No Wind was a big help but I don't care, it was fantastic. :)

  Nice 9, CD!  I'm tempted to try the L10 set myself.

  I did the Cabo thing immediately after reading your post.  It was a lot of fun playing all those shots I've never seen before.

  I'd like to have another opportunity to hit this approach on the first with a few yards less power and watch it complete the big bend back toward the hole.  Birdied the third with this ordinary looking putt.  

  I got between clubs on the 4th and left a choked 9 short in the rough.  the 5th set up perfectly for a full LW, but I mishit it and failed the up-and-down.

  The 6th was a complete disaster.  An early click left me in the bunker to the left, needing 10 yards forward and 10 feet up just to reach the green, with no hope of stopping it close and a good chance of running all the way across.  My choked full LW only went 8 yds forward and 8 feet up.  Pitched it 12 feet past and the starter putter missed a dead straight 12 footer for me.

  I almost got some redemption with this 52 foot snake on 7, where I needed 54 feet.

  Gotta wrap it up...not much happened on the back in any event.  The first 3-putt was a fiasco from less than 5 feet, the second was the 18th green at its worst.  

  Here's a good example of the challenge of starters.  A counterexample, actually, as I screwed it up.  But you can see how a drive to the left of the fairway is impossible with the starter D, forcing a carry of the bunker or a layup.

  Hey Ben,

  Great to see you knocking around these games. The L10 Tour Starter Clubs are only 782 credits. We have GB's selling for 700. The clubs come in 6 different colors and are high trajectory for starter clubs. In reality, they're way better than the starter clubs for accuracy and stopping power. I normally use the 64 credit WGT GI-S ball with them. The combination creates shots that play beautifully. You can hit shots closer with less roll out and trust the distances. They're so much fun it's a sin.;)

  You mentioned above what I consider the theme of playing starter gear from the tips. Finding and creating shots we've never seen before. I need to play intuitively to have an interest in WGT. Repeating the same old thing bores me to death. These games we've been playing from the tips with starter type gear has me finding again why I joined. That feeling of discovery while playing.

  One other thing, all this starter gear playing I've been doing has my Fancy Club playing in a mess. ;)))

  I tried the March Free Unlimited 18 Hole Uneven Lies Tourney on BOH with the L10 Tour Starter Set and the 64 credit WGT GI-S ball. Legend Tier had Low Wind and Tourney Green Speed This was a real challenge of patience and humility. UL from the tips on BOH with these sticks was nothing but creating shots and simply creating ways to get around the course. Some holes played very well and others were extremely tricky where bogey was the best I could do. I shot an 80 that felt better while playing instead of reading it here on the screen now. I'm positive someone can beat that but just getting out of there with no 3 putts and not blowing up on a single hole was good enough for me.:)

  I bought a set of the Tour Starters - gold for me, too, just because it's fun to imagine playing with solid gold clubs.  I'm much more hopeful about achieving par from the tips with them.   I improved my score at the BOH UL by three to 77.  Gotta go, will post the card tomorrow.
