Wow .... you guys are bringing back a lot of old memories to be sure. I thought it was amazing that Tibbets won the Jerry Lewis tourney with a 3 under par. That would get you 42,000th position nowadays... I found a couple of old links awhile back to probably my first two tournaments in 2009 ... The May WGT International Open - 6151st position and the week 19 Kiawah 18 hole tournament -1731st position ...
And I do remember well trying to qualify for the VUSO on Bethpage with all starter gear ... the first three holes weren't too bad ... when I went to tee off on #4, I thought MAN .... this is one long par 5 ... and then came #5, where you could only reach the very closest tip end of the fairway with driver, and that only with a tailwind. Standing on the green of #18, I was 12 over par on my first attempt ... soon after, I tried a second time only to be 18 over par in the same place. Needless to say, I didn't even card a score... it was ridiculous having to make three shots to reach almost every green on the par 4's ... It made you appreciate how really talented the few elite players were on this site.
Other than the free tournaments, we had solo or multiplayer stroke play and that was it. No matchplay, alternate shot, blitz, or skins. No ready-gos ... prior to Bethpage, we had three CTTH courses, Wolf Creek, Bali Hai, and Kiawah front nine. We only had Kiawah full 18 stroke play. I think there are a few still here that can remember when there was only the front nine of Kiawah for stroke play, and I think Fuzzygazz can remember when there was only one or two CTTH courses. No stroke play at all yet ...
I really think it was much more fun back then ... you had to create shots that would get you close to the pin (or closer anyway). There was no green speed indicator when you played stroke play when I started, because there was only one green speed for all tournaments and all three tiers IIRC ...
And only two sets of tee boxes until they created Master tier ... those were indeed the good old days of WGT.
