I did it! I shot 56!
Which means the cut will drop to 55, of course.
The round started (OK, I restarted twice tonight) with tap-in birdies at 1 and 2. Then a 6-footer on 3, and then the closest I've ever come to a double eagle on any course. Tap it in for eagle and suddenly I realize this round might be going somewhere.
And then I miss a 10-footer on the next hole. Hmm.
But then a 12-foot double breaker drops on #6, and a 16-footer across the slope on #7, and then I hit this approach inside 4 feet on #8...
...on my third shot because I drove too far uphill and found the brush.
Missed the ding right and had 21 feet from the fringe on 9, and couldn't hole the putt. OK. 28's pretty good, but I'd rather have a 27 and get a little breathing room for the back.
Then I got on a roll to start the back nine. Made a fairly simple 11-footer up the hill on 10, then hit it to inside 5 feet on 11. Then hit to the back right of the green on 12 and barely kept my eagle putt inside 10 feet, but made the comeback putt across the slope. Another tap-in on 13, a 6-footer on 14, and now I'm thinking 54 is in play.
But I missed another par 3 green to the right (came close on the pitch but didn't play enough break) and then lipped out a 6-footer from below the hole on 16. Now I've definitely got a case of nerves going to the last two...
...and dinged my 5 iron on 17 to 8 feet and drained the birdie. Now I figure I've got it made - I shouldn't make par on 18. Besides, TarheelsRule and fatdan gave me good advice. If I hit it a little long and right... it will crawl up the hill and stay there???
I tapped it to the edge of the hill and it ran only 8 feet past, which I was pleased with. But on the birdie putt I wasn't sure I'd played enough break, and I missed the ding on the low side, and it banged in the left side!
I felt like I was striking my irons really well. The 10.9 foot average includes the 60-footers on 12 and 18, so if my calculations are correct, I had an average of 5.2 feet for birdie. I like those odds.
