Took to the electric guitar in his 20's.. & never looked back.

Voted 3rd best guitar player ever (behind Hendrix & D.Allman) in a 2003 Rolling Stone survey.

    Huge, booming voice too!

    Aged 89. RIP.

I wonder where Lucille will go.

Saw him perform live locally in the '70s, front row seat...walked up to the stage after his concert and he was greeting folks and handing out monogrammed guitar picks.  I got to shake his hand and he gave me a pick.

He wasn't a great guitarist, even admitted he never learned how to play chords...but he was the consummate showman and an expressive communicator, spreading his love of the blues worldwide to countless audiences for many years.

He loved his women, he loved his blues, and most of all he loved life.  There will never be another and he'll be sorely missed.

edit: Just saw the post above about Lucille...there have been many versions of his guitar over the years, some will probably go to his children far and wide and some will end up with collectors or in museums.

Nope not the greatest guitarist but with stinging emotive licks you instantly knew who it was.

He oozed the blues and he outlived many of the other great bluesmen, so rest assured, there well be one hell of a jam session in heaven tonight.

Alan, agreed, his vibrato was his signature and perfect for his single-note style.  He didn't need to speed around the fretboard or impress with pyrotechnics.
