Dave, my first golf game was links on a MSDOS PC in the early eighties. I played it for a while and even bought a few different courses. But my next stop then was WGT. I am very impressed by the physics model and the accurate mapping of the terrain. But I always considered  the look of the course images avatars and equipment very disappointing. And that got much worse when the quality of my monitor improved drastically.

I have a laptop with a very good 2560x1600 monitor. But I don´t use that for WGT because I can´t get it recognize mouse clicks reliably enough to even get close to the ping much of the time. So the biggest shock came when I first loocked at the WGT courses an my new 27" desktop monitor and immediately recognized why the look always was disappointing.

Regarding the network and server load and loading times, WGT should offer us the option to store the necessary images on our own computer. This would reduce loading times and operating costs and WGT would not have to use such poor images.

l remember my first sim golf game  it would have been very early to like yours Andreas, Peter Alliss and Alex Haig did the commentary on it, the golf sim itself was Rubbish but the commentary and banter was fantastic,

After a poorly played round Peter would say to Alex Dear oh Dear  hes going to need a gin and Tonic in the club house bar this Eveing after that performance. lol

Wish l could find it just for  those great one Liners

They are typical compression artifacts and not the imperfections you get when you photoshop a different sky into an image.

Why did you call them smudges in the 1st place and not artifacts? LOL

"Hey guys, here's all the hi-def photos we spent hundreds of thousands of dollars and months shooting and preparing for the game!"  I don't think so. That would be giving away their intellectual property. Unless they encrypted them.  But that might/would impair the quality.

Do you play full screen on the 27" monitor?  What's the resolution?

Still play Pebble Beach Golf Links on my old Sega Genesis occasionally.  Sure it's dated, but fun to play.  That and John Madden 93 rofl

I called them smudges because there are different types of compression artifacts. The smudges are the most distracting on most images. But many have very bad square tile artifacts in the textures of the grass too.

Its an 4K monitor. Sometimes I play fullscreen and sometimes in a window. Encrypting the images does not change the contents. It just a tiny bit of extra work during decoding for a modern CPU.

    Hi Dave

I remember that commentary well! Included gems like

'Now come on lads this is golf not water polo!'

"If that ball had a body, it would be up to its neck in sand."

"off with the sweater, three deep breaths and out with the driver" and

"Now how on earth did that happen?"

Called Actua Golf 2, I remember it from the PS2. This is from the PC version

and not a ding in sight!

    Cheers!

    Rich.
