Hello WGT Land, I need some help. As you can see I am new to this game and not a very frequent users, mainly because I have to work and I am a piss poor player. I know I need a lot better equipment but just can't afford to use food money to purchase credits. So I use what I got, wait for free balls, like the pretty green one we got yesterday.. Go Irish..  I need help with putting, My friends (they are not that good either) have suggested several articles, read the forum, watch videos and practice.  I watched a video made by an individual named Young46, and he suggested a method called JC Snead. It helped him during the early stages of his game. So here I am in reverse view counting dot movement 1/1000, 2/1000, 3/1000 all the way to 10. Do the calculation, move the aimer, adjust the speed, take the shot and miss. "What the Hell am I looking for is what I am thinking to myself?" "What did I miss when aiming?" I insult  myself and call me stupid because I don't get.. So I moved on then I watch a video by Tekoma, "the Vertex" method, chip mode, aligning the toes, aligning the putter, lining first and last dot movement, so many I can't count.. Did you know he cares 25 different methods in his bag?  I look at the putt think I see where the break is, zoom in to pick the appropriate line, and I always guess wrong, take the putt and of course I miss. Again the personnel insults.  I have read the article pertaining to measuring the putting stroke, pull it back until the putter head stops, take a shot and measure the distance, did that for all meter scales. That works fairly well for distance, but not for aiming.

Is it better to use/try finesse with putts or ram it like I see some do? I was watching Young46 play a round on Merion, some of the putts looked to me like they were big breakers, but he would only move the aimer a few inches, hit the ball and it goes right in. So I took notes and had to try the course, everytime I tried it the ball went sreaming by the hole and I had a longer putt then what I started with..

Oh well back to practicing, any suggestions on how to read the dots and aiming will be greatly appreciated. Oh poop, here comes the boss back to work.. Good shooting everyone.. Have a blessed day..

    My two Pfennig:

Don't you take it too serious. You see, I am putting free-handed, only with a distance table.

In your state of game and with the equipment you have, it's good enough to play for two-putts: A good approach putt and - hopefully - a tap-in.

You have to keep in mind that the green speeds are changing frequently ("fast" is now your regular speed), and with the speed, the reaction to slopes does vary a lot.

All balls act the same on the greens, only the putters make the difference. I mean the two putters in your games, one of them an arm length outside the screen.

Equipment-wise, the Starter 3WD and wedges are crap IMHO, while the Starter putter is not so bad (it has some weakness against custom putters though).
Buy two short wedges first, and don't buy putters below 500 cr!

    TxNormaJean:

This is great, stay with it. I read that same article 7 years ago and have been putting that way ever since. Be careful with the moves, they're sensitive. Don't trust the first one, cancel it and "sneak" up on it for the most accuracy-a "waggle" of sorts.

I think you may be making it harder on yourself, trying to make the aim an equation. If you play golf IRL you know no amount of math is going to help you putt, you need your instincts and what your eyes sense to aim properly. You already know how hard to hit the putt so start honing those instincts.

It all starts with envisioning the putting arc. Picture in your mind's eye what a successful putt would look like and learn how the speed of those dots affects it. Faster dots means your putt is going to look more like a "C" than slower dots where that arc would look more like a "(". Then putt to the top of that arc. If the speed is right, the putt will follow that arc and drop. Lipouts happen when the speed is too fast-that side door slammed shut.

Set up a practice round, get to a green and use the mulligan feature to develop the sense of how dot speed affects  the break (arc.) Mulligans use up ball life so use the free ball. A few of points to get you going....miss the ding on the down side of the break and you will always miss; putts that appear to break in opposite directions on the way to the cup usually play to a straight aim; get the speed right and the side doors of the cup open up and the putt drops;  GL  :-)

And some players putts get sucked into the cup like a black hole.My putts on the otherhand get pushed away from the cup like +/- magnets.

+/- magnets act like black holes ;)

You're probably talking about +/+ magnets?
