Alonso walking away is a true testament of the amount of hard work the engineers put in to these machines making them as safe as possible.

yea, amazing to see the car fold away leaving the cockpit untouched.

Feared the worse when the car flipped and landed upside down..his head was still a good few inches off the tarmac though.

Even just 10 years ago that could've turned out very different.

It will be interesting to see how soon they implement the new "cockpit cage" or whatever it may be called.

Yup...fine lines needed to be tread...

F1 HAS to be open cockpit imo...

Drivers want safety but still the same visibility !  ;-)

And really part of the allure of racing is watching the best of the best doing what they do, so well, even with the inherent dangers involved ?

And maybe because there is a Life risk every lap they do..affords them the respect we bestow ?

No 'cage' would have prevented Masa's freak injury either....

Alonso had a close call @ Spa in 2012......wheel missed head by inches again.

Jump starting 'crazy' Maldonado didn't help and let's not mention Grossjean ;-))

Schumacher's 300 th GP too if I remember correctly.

Incredible safe cars.  Can't believe Alonso walked away from this

Thanks for posting a picture... my video/picture posting skills are a little rusty.

    Don

Your Welcome.   Big Thumbs up to all the Engineers. 10 years ago it might have been a different story. Hard to imaging that was a F1 car.  The rest of it is all over the track and the gravel.

There is new thing they are testing at the moment called the 'Halo'  I think like a ring going around the drivers head  so they be safe from flying tyres and debris.   At the moment they are saying that might be bad if there is a fire and might take too long to get out.

Paulton's  Vid   shows the crash,  not sure if you guys can watch it, but it's got a copyright flag on it at my end and won't play.

It won't play for me anymore either. When I looked there was 4 vids of the crash but only the one I posted worked at the time. Looks like the F1 people are right on top of this and won't allow any unauthorised vids on youtube.
