    Hi,

Many of you advise in getting 3 wedges - and getting rid of the hybrid.

Which 3 wedge degrees should one get?

    Thank you.

You made a good start with the Cleveland 64. Would recommend Cleveland 60 and 56 Degree wedges. As you learn them, pay particular attention to how your ball reacts to 'spin'.  Full back spin, with the higher level Cleveland wedges will the ball to backup VIOLENTLY.

    Good luck!

Kind of depends on which irons you're planning to buy. Thats how you can slot in the 3rd gap wedge. I had Ping PW at 115. Hence my wedges were Cleveland 60 yd, ATV 77 yd and Ping 95 yd.

    Good reasoning, also by TS.

It's not the degrees to observe but the distances. Standard spacings are 50 - 75(77) - 100 or 60 - 80 - 100, but uneven spacings may do well.

Also important to know the punching yardages which stand for almost equal shots with the high level wedges + balls: They have similar stopping qualities.

A 64W, a 60W and a 56W.  Which ones depends on you but those are the 3 degrees you need.

I agree with YJ on the 3 degrees that you need. And as you already have the Cleveland RTX 64 degree get the 60 and 56 degree to go with them.

    +1

As an aside, one of the best tips I ever read on here was regarding the Cleveland 64-degree wedge. For shorter shots, (i.e. < 40 yards), add about 6 yards to the shot, and use full backspin (the only time you'll probably use full back spin with the wedge), the ball will bounce once and come to a dead stop.

For example, if the yardage is 30 yards, hit it like it's 36 yards or about 60% of full swing (you have to play with it a bit and account for wind). At least that's worked well for me. Still, there are a couple of greens (esp. Pebble Beach) that it will still spin back on considerably, so you have to experiment by course.

Bearing in mind the OP isn't at the level to buy high level wedges, I'd say going by degrees isn't the best way. The lower level wedges don't go the same distance, eg Cleve 56 deg only goes 90 yds. It'll be fine if he uses TM,Nike,Max irons but with Pings, I'd want to split the distance more towards the special wedge than the PW. Hence, I'd want the wedge to go 95/98/100 or even 105 if your mid wedge is 58 deg Ping which goes 85 yds.

Also, with these wedges, you don't need to worry about violent spin unless u use a high spin rated ball or are in big head wind.
