golfkid210: Jake, I haven't heard that last piece of
advice before. When you say into the wind, is that only referring to a
headwind? Or does it do the same type of thing on
tail/crosswinds?
Firstly I need to add that I was speaking
about using BS with golf balls that have high spin. Seeing that you
use starters it shouldn't impact you as much.
But to answer your
question about wind, I am very careful trying to read wind properly.
Sometimes what looks like a crosswind can really knock a shot down short
if it's even slightly into.
Think about it this way. Say you
are hitting a shot from 160 yds with a 20 crosswind pointing @8:30.
Backspin can really hurt distance here because you have to aim the shot
well right and will actually be going into a significant wind for at
least 100 yards before balls starts to turn back with the wind.
Many
times (from Legend tees) you will be forced to play some element of BS
even on shots into the wind and these are must dings. On these shots I
try to figure out how little backspin I can get away with and still be
able to stop the shot where I want. This strategy is much more
forgiving than using full BS which I see far too many players do.
Another
thing to look at is not using full BS unless you are taking a full
swing or very very close to it. Hard to judge distance and you will get
some crazy deviations if you're hitting 85% of meter with full BS.
