If one can't "change balls" during play, then how is it that one can begin to use "original" balls when one no longer has another ball like the one taken out of play... such an explanation does not make sense; that is, one is doing just what you indicated one can't do: "change balls" during play.
If one can't "change balls", then one's round should either be ended, or one should be allowed to purchase similar balls before continuing.

Agree completely, they are invoking the one ball rule in one hand and then breaking it in the other.
It would be a bit like playing in a real golf tournament and running out of balls,
"so is that me disqualified then?"
"oh no, you can change to the driving range ball now".
Would it be so difficult to have a pop up screen that appears when you have used your last premium ball to offer you the chance to buy some more?
