Freezing

  My Freezing experience: I've succumbed to almost everything mentioned here. I understand I barely meet system reqs. Tried Fireox & meter got a bit smoother, but freeze was phenomenal. Yesterday I left a game due to the worst stutter I’ve seen since joining in April. Lost 5 balls, put 3 more into ‘virtually’ (no pun intended) unplayable lies @ KI. Long story short … did everything recommended above. Wala; minimal stutter, meter is rocket fast & mainly smooth. I think the biggest help was Disk Cleanup, but won’t discount flash clear, my ISP performance etc., etc. I have noticed different meter performance @ peak times for my ISP, Verizon DSL @1.5 mbps. Switched back to IE  & have shot 2 sub par rounds & played some fairly good Match play rounds @ + or – 1. I plan on trying Adam’s ‘Adjust for best performance’ fix & will report back later in day.

  Please stop bashing WGT & Faterson here. They have helped ME with almost every problem I’ve encountered. Especially Faterson, who for the record is just one of the regular Joe’s here. They are both trying to help us all. WGT even admitted to some probs on their end. It’s a free game that most of us enjoy, MOST of the time. I understand everyone’s dilemma, well except for those with really high end stuff.

  Folks,

  Another oldie but goodie solution for machines that border minimum requirements is it to increase your paging file size. When the RAM is full, it writes to the hard disk through the paging file. If the paging file is too small, it has the same effect as filling up the RAM. Freeze.

  Depending on your operating system, Google the following phrase..."Increase paging file Windows XP"

  Here's the process for WindowsXP:

  How to manually change the size of the virtual memory paging file

  You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the administrator’s group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may prevent you from completing this procedure.
  
  To manually change the size of virtual memory, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance click Settings.
  3. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Virtual memory click Change.
  4. Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
  5. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, type a new paging file size in megabytes (MB) in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.
  6. Click OK to close the dialog box and apply changes.

  Note After you change the size of the paging file, you may be prompted to restart Windows. If you are prompted to restart, the changes will not take effect until Windows is restarted.

  SOLID Results .........                                                                                                                          "I plan on trying Adam’s ‘Adjust for best performance’ fix & will report back later in day." I tried this fix & it worked very well. Some of the graphics on my forum posts seems distorted, but I now have a steady & fast meter. I could've been -3 on a KI random 3, if I'd have made 2, 6' putts for birdie.

  Hi,

  The 'Adjust for best performance' will remove the pretty effects and memory intense processes as you'll see in the buttons when you make the change. This should have a dramatic effect on your game play in a very positive way. Please keep in mind that this is not a catch-all fix-all solution and doesn't touch the virtual memory.

  If this makes a change but not enough, please try the Virtual Memory Paging File change listed above. My personal suggestion is to double the size if you have the hard-drive space available.

  Thanks for the tip Faterson, unfortunately that was not the issue.  The version I had installed said for IE, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari.  Uninstalled and reinstalled but still nothing.  Guess I'll just keep running on FF or Chrome for now but to address your contention that those are superior sites for gaming, I have my 2 lowest rounds on a wireless IE connection (28 , 58). Appreciate the attempt to resolve though.

  HI Jakestanfill7,

  Wireless would be optimal for this game now that I think about it considering you're using high speed with an excellent connection. The reason? Well the router will provide a steady and consistent connection to your wireless NIC. If you're hooked straight into the modem, you have to deal with the fluctuation in the connection. Because wireless is throttled down by the router and limited by your NIC, you'll notice more consistency.

  99% of the time, it is unwise to promote wireless over direct connection for online gaming. This game is the exception with the following constraints:

  1. You're well within range of the router with an unchanging excellent connection.
  2. You're not running any internet dependent applications during game play.
  3. You're not using a wireless mouse or wireless keyboard. (They will cause you to mishit)
  4. Believe it or not, do not play on a glass or metal surface if you're using a laptop. Wood assists in the retention of the signal. If you don't have a wood surface, find a product made of wood and put it under your laptop.
  5. Last but not least, don't eat after midnight or get wet

  Thanks for the feedback Adam.  I have also had very positive results when my connection strength was just "Very Good".  The key variable for me has just been that it remains constant and doesn't fluctuate at all.  My lag issues seemed to be totally resolved until last week's updates and now have terrible problems with it.  I can't figure it out because absolutely nothing has changed on my end and all caches have been cleared repeatedly.

  Still can't figure out how to open it in IE though.  That changed after last week's updates too as I had been able to open the game in IE prior.  Might try uninstalling IE and putting it back in.  Flash version is correct, etc.

  Side note, would I see any difference running on WPA,  WPA2 or a combination of both?

  Have tried all of the suggestions to improving peformance in this post but still lagging badly.

  I would be curious to know if you've unknowingly installed any updates to IE coincidentally near the time of the WGT updates. If you go to Add/Remove Programs and check the box at the top that says "Also show updates," look for IE updates "only" over the past week. Uninstall them, reboot and try again. Microsoft has a sneaky way of installing their updates without telling you.

  Also, changing your authentication methods won't makes a difference in the lag.

  Honestly, I've held job titles including, but not limited to, Technical Support, IT Manager, Network Admin, Senior .Net Developer, and SQL Server Admin, and even a certified Propane Technician to get me through college...with that, I can tell you I've seen some very strange things when it comes to PC's. You really have to consider 'all' possibilities on your end before casting blame outward.
