    Robert1893:

A player can't purchase course knowledge or course management from the Pro Shop. Those things only come from playing. That's really what makes players competitive--knowing what shot to make in each situation.

If anyone ever doubt this, just take a look at the etour qualifications. Everyone use the same equipment but the top players will still be the top players.

Very true wisdom is obtained through countless hours of studying and having tons of reps with hands on practice. Of just 1 course....if what you think is true then I can just watch all of tom Bradys films and become a Goat just like him. T

No, but one can understand what it takes to become the GOAT. That was the essential point of part of the discussion.

The discussion was not whether one can be a competitive or elite player by watching videos and reading advice but not competing. The discussion revolved around whether one can understand what it takes to be a competitive player without playing competitively.

That's a difference with a distinction. The one deals with execution; the other deals with comprehension.

While I may understand, I may not be able to execute due to a number of other variables. One such variable might simply be the lack of talent. Nevertheless, my lack of talent does not negate the fact that I can know what I need to do.

    Exactly.

And one of the points that's been lost in the discussion is that (generally) the top players are not at Legend tier, which is where the OP is.

There are some excellent players at Legend tier. No doubt about it, But a cursory look at the monthly or yearly leader board suggests the overwhelming majority of top players are at Tour Legend and above.

Intuitively, I suspect Legend tier is where one can probably be extremely competitive without equipment from above Level 90.

Again, it's not that difficult to get to Legend tier (hasn't been for a long time). And one probably (generally) finds himself or herself competing against players who are similarly-situated.

Of course, if one is entering tournaments open to all tiers, then (of course) one is at a disadvantage due to lower-level equipment and less course knowledge. But if that's a surprise to people, then let me be the first to welcome you to earth! That's kinda how it works around here (i.e. life is not fair). 😀

The most game changer is not the biggest driver in my book. A 90ish driver can do a good job. The real changer is the L97 iron set. That's the level you want asap.

All you guys standing round the urinal having a pissing contest, or are you standing at a high par 3 tee at Chambers pissing into the wind. It’s a game, just have fun, try to be competitive if that’s your go, WGT loves your input ($),

Ok I do understand thats why I said gaining wisdom comes from intense studies and rigorous hands on practice. Sorry about offending you and with saying that you also need to check your ego. Cause i said with all do respect just like you said to one of the others who commented. I also said it might sting and I was definitely on point with that. Look we are all trying to get better at this game some more than others so let's just try and drop this stupid debate that has gone a bit out of control wouldn't you say? And just enjoy the game the best we can. Have a great day and hopefully we'll meet on the course and be able to compete with one another

tl;dr: I think you read too much into my reply.

I'm actually not sure if this is directed toward me or not. But since I had replied to you, I'm guessing it is. If not, feel free to totally disregard.

I can assure you that I was neither offended not do I have an ego involved. I simply disagreed and then explained why I disagreed. That's all. Nothing more to it than that. And I believed my reply was fairly straightforward and respectful, so I'm unsure why it elicited an accusatory reply.

I post without passion. In other words, while I have opinions on the game and related matters, I don't hold them strongly, and they certainly don't define who I am (i.e. there's no ego involved). So, if someone demonstrates to me that my opinion is wrong, my attitude is, "Oh, ok. I had that one wrong."

    That's it.

This is a discussion board in which people discuss. I'm always baffled when people suggest the discussion should be dropped. If others don't want to enter the discussion, that's fine. But I don't understand the felt need to tell others to stop discussing. I really don't.

Interestingly enough, more times than not, those who come in and tell others to "stop," do so after the discussion had actually stopped (or at least paused). Their calls to cease typically prolong the discussion rather than bringing it to an end.

Finally, if you believe anything posted to me on here "stings," then you definitely have never encountered "reviewer #2." The reviews or responses in academia are much more stinging and brutal than anything on here. One of my grad school professors was actually proud that an editor termed one of my professor's reviews on a manuscript to be "borderline libelous."

Apologies for the long post. With the video below, I'll try to leave it on a humorous note. Ironically, the problem was reviewer #3 and not reviewer #2.
