You should've played it safe and laid-up with a short iron.

with all due respect richard whether i played safe or not  25% rough does not take 71yds off your ball

Are you sure it was 25% rough? Most of the rough @ # 2 Kiawah is 35/40 not 25%. But even if it was, much of your 3 wood distance just like your driver distance is roll so if you land where the ball can't roll you can lose that much distance even with only 25% rough

I never play a wood out of rough on the full. Just saying.

I didn't learn the first time, or the second time on that hole. I know better now. That is one of WGT's little ball depositories. Don't try it again, get it in the fairway, and try for par. Better safe than sorry.

A 3 Wood is never the club of choice from any rough, IMO. Especially when there's a hazard to cross. Try and hit that shot again, even 10 times, your going to get the same results every-time. WGT is not at fault this time my friend.

In most cases Richard you are right. But with the new R11 3 wood you can punch it out of the rough fairly effectively but not on Kiawah #2 or any hole where you have to clear weeds or other areas that would cost you a stroke and a lost ball. Where he had to have been the shot of choice is a 4 iron aimed to the left side of the fairway just to get it back in play. And in some cases just a punch 7 or 8 iron meant too land short of the ditch. Sometimes even a 4 iron out of that rough will get you just far enough to land in that ditch.

I agree for the most part Sting. However, for me, I would still elect to play a full or punch iron from the rough laying-up in front of a hazard and go for the par. Even with the R11 3 Wood, its easy to skull or top the ball from the thicker rough if you miss ding. JMO.

The 3W loses more than you expect out of 20-25. Where the irons deal with it well, the wood loses a lot. I've been surprised a number of times by this and learned the hard way.
