    Here's that question.

    Q. Every month, a girl gets allowance. Assume last year she had no money, and kept it up to now. Then she spends 1/2 of her money on clothes, then 1/3 of the remaining money on games, and then 1/4 of the remaining money on toys. After she bought all of that, she had $7777 left. Assuming she only gets money by allowance, how much money does she earn every month?

    tbe

    no trick questions :)

    OK I'll take a stab at it.

    I'd say .. zero ... you don't earn an allowance.. your given it.

    Or .. she gets 7,777 / month allowance if that's what your looking for.   (change here) :)

    Of course if you were talking about my wife ... she doesn't know how much she gets, or what she has left ... but she's got the spending part down like a pro.

    Couldn't resist...

    You started by saying that last year she had no money. I thus assume that the amount left (7777$) and what she spent was over a year (I also assume that there is no language tricks). Indeed the following part is not clear :) (what means now in this context).

    thebigeasy707:

    Assume last year she had no money, and kept it up to now.

    The total amount of money she get before spending it is then 31108$. Indeed, she spends half of it for clothes, thus it remains 15554$. From that she spend 1/3 on games, it remains 10369.33$... From that money, she spend 1/4 on toys, it remains 7777$.

    Thus per month she gets 31108/12 = 2592.33 (but this could be wrong because it's not clear from what you wrote over which period of time she got all the money)

    Regards

    Where x=total income (assumes 12 months allowance saved up.)

    x -.5x = clothes

    x - .5x - .5x/3 = games

    (x - .5x  - .5x3)/4 = toys

    therefore

    .5x - (.5x - .5x/3) - (( .5x - .5x/3)/4))  =  $7777

    factoring out x

    x (( 1 - .5/3 - (.5 - .5/3)/4)) = $7777

    x ( 1 - .167 - .083) = $7777

    .25x = $7777

    x = $31108

    allowance =$2592.33/month

    (Fabian probably did it in his head.)  :-D

    @benja- I got $2222 before I realized the 1/4 for the toys doesn't include what was spent on games.
