I usually don't say much when it comes to this subject.  But, anyone disabling AV when they are on the internet are inviting troubleAny good AV today will be kernel mode driven which take very little resources.

    100% agree here......

even if you're only disabling while to play WGT.....remember that the advertising scripts/earn credits stuff etc used pull data from non wgt servers etc.

you also don't have to be viewing a site to dl a virus/trojan......many viruses/trojans out there can hijack onto your system via port sniffers which remotely sniff out open ports/ security holes on your pc just because you're connected to the internet. so if you disable your AV with inbuilt Firewall....then you're gonna get shafted sooner or later.

how to remove AV2012 Rogue Trojan

    TWOMINUSONE:

Question: is it possible for a virus to affect one site only, as in WGT? I ask this because i had terrible trouble with WGT just over a week ago. Any time i visited the WGT site, it would basically crash on me, pages would take an age to load, if they did eventually load, and i was getting froze out in all types of games. This is the post i put up then:

    http://www.wgt.com/forums/t/92352.aspx

I play this game easily 10 hours a day and never get any virus warnings. Most likely because I use adblock plus with firefox and have never seen off site related adverts anywhere on WGT for 6 months now. Sure the WGT servers might run a tad slow every now and again, but that's just the internet for you. Sometimes it'll run faster or slower than usual depending on traffic.

It's my opinion that these AV Alerts are to do with the advertiser's servers/sites becoming infected....not the WGT servers. All WGT do is place advertising code snippets into their pages where they want the ads to show....but for example the http://ads.yancy-loves-haribos.com  links maybe direct links to the infected advertising sites which basically cause your AV to throw up warnings if the ad site's been compromised.

Reputable advertising companies when notified do clean up the infections on their side pretty quickly but they are under constant threat/attack (a bit like being the last steak up for grabs when the Devs are playing poker) and sometimes the attackers get success, which is why we'll see reports on here for virus/trojan warnings every couple of months.....but the advertisers deal with the problem pretty quickly and the problem's gone.

Just out of interest I dont think it has to do with the WGT nations I have joined and I havent had any problems although a few months ago my antivirus would throw me out of WGT saying there was a problem encountered

Thanks TBE, had to ask as the WGT site was the only site i was getting kicked from. Problem lasted for about 3 days before i eventually located a virus and got rid of it.

Just to add, the WGT site ran smooth as ice after i got rid if it.

Buy a Mac. Never deal with antivirus crap again. Best thing I ever did was pay a few hundred extra bucks for a Mac and not deal with that crap anymore.

A good AV program will silently work in the back-ground. It won't interfere with the WGT game-client, or computer performance.

    Very sound advice indeed.

I never even thought about turning off AV protection-it isn't an interference. What you do have to pay attention to is the time your AV updates. Some are set up to do this automatically at the same time every day or week. If you happen to be in a game when this happens you will see problems until it's finished, mostly loading but some meter stumbling.

DON'T DISABLE AV.  As a person that has been in IT for many many many years, I don't suggest that you disable AV.

Yes, I know that AV 2012 is a rogue AV program as seen in my first post.  I see it all the time in my job, people getting infected with it.

It for sure came from WGT, most likely as I said originally, in an ad that the code was embedded in.

I do find it quite hilarious how no one from WGT has even commented on this thread.

But just as TBE said, it can't and won't be WGT servers doing this.  Why would they knowingly infect their customers when the customers is what allows them to exist?  It has to be from an ad that is being displayed on WGT.com.

And for all you MAC lovers, MAC sucks.  GL trying to play any of the mainstream PC games on the market right now, won't work on your MAC!  Apple FTL!
