To go with G20's or Not? That is the question.

I am a level 56 Tour Pro and I currently use the R11 set. I am happy with the set but know once I move to the Master tees the R11 driver may not be enough. I am thinking of getting the lvl58 G20 Driver once I reach that level. But the irons are another story. They only offer 5 yards over my R11 irons. Though most say that the long irons stick better than the lower level R11's. So should I upgrade my irons as well or should I just stay with the R11's? Just wanted to get a few more thoughts on this. Thanks.

If you aspire to Master tier and beyond, upgrading your clubs and balls is extremely helpful to lower your average and move up another Tier. The G20 driver you can get soon will advance you a lot further down the fairway (rated 270 but more like 280) for much shorter shots to the green - and more birdies! At level 59 (not far away either), you can get the rest of the G20's which will serve you well (or wait to get the full set and some real savings) as a Master and even Tour Master (though you will be tempted to upgrade again). The putter (Rossa) I use and so  do many Legends - I like it better than the Nike or Ghosts (except have not had the option yet for level 92 Ghost). Also learn your wedges and your scores will drop. But the added length of the tee will improve your game immediately. Yes the specs on the G20 irons seem pretty close to the lower level R11's however, the higher trajectory on the Pings is needed to compete on the tougher courses with a lot of elevation (think Bethpage).

I agree with everything skccvb says above.  The transition to Masters tier is like a slap in the face in terms of adjusting to distances.  You will be hitting longer irons and finding yourself with longer putts left and right without the stopping power that is inherent with short irons.  It took a lot of time, but I was able to start getting respectable scores again, even without a club upgrade.

I originally debated the R11s or the K15s, eventually going with the K15s because of the slower meter speed - they seemed nearly identical otherwise.

Since then, I went with the full G20 set and after only a couple of weeks, I can say a few things about them overall:

    1. The meter on the G20s is slower than your R11s - expect to have to adjust, unless you're missing the ding right with your R11s
    2. The G20s are about half as forgiving as the R11s - the more off the ding you are, the more variation left/right in the shot.
    3. The higher trajectory means the wind will have more of an affect on the flight of the ball.  The same is true about spin, at least for me.  This has been the hardest adjustment for me with the irons is judging the difference in wind adjustments and distance based on spin.
    4.  The higher trajectory adds to stopping power that I've noticed - the K15s are also the med/high.  Again, still making adjustments.

I chose to buy the set for a couple of reasons.  If I just had the driver with my K15s, there would have been some tough gaps to fill here and there.  Also, having the same meter speed across all my clubs was important.  Trying to go from a faster driver to slower irons back to faster driver was not something I wanted to do.

You're already using the three-wedge approach, which is a good path.  My current set of wedges has me at distances of 85, 65 and 50 yards, but with the full G20s, I'm thinking I might move to 95, 75 and 60 to better cover distances under 100 yards.

The approach I took when making a final decision was looking beyond Master level and what would take me the furthest.  The 5 yards may not seem like much now, but every bit will count in the long run.  Plus, it gives you that much more time to get a feel for the clubs which will be the most valuable thing when hitting the higher tiers.

The driver will definitely make a difference - in the long run, though, getting the full set may make an even bigger difference.

Thanks for the advice. I decided to go with the full set. I am working out the yardages now. Does anyone have an excel spreadsheet of the G20 yardages at different power percentages?

I have one that lists rating, actual distance (no wind, no elevation, with Nike or Callaway ball), plus backspin, topspin, and punch. Note I do NOT have BS ratings for CG 60/64- that is because you need to think long and hard before going there! This is my full set -

Also - ignore the 3 wood stats - that's upper level 3 wood; calibrate your woods on hole 1, KIA, low wind and flat -

skccvb... nice tables!  Where do you practice to dial in these numbers?  And is that the Callaway and Nike DISTANCE or SPIN balls.  Guessing there should be 3 - 10 yards difference there.

I calibrate clubs using KIA hole 1 under the WGT Community Tab - "golf courses" -choose hole 1; the fairway is close enough to the tee to hit mid-long irons and all long clubs - then I hit to green with shorter clubs.

These tables are with Nike distance balls -I do not believe the NIKE or Callaway spin balls will travel any significantly different distance on short or mid irons (maybe a yard or two), but probably takes off 5+ yards or so on longer irons. Real difference would be driver and 3 wood. But I have not tested that out...

    Glad you found these helpful.
