Stop press, folks! Ben (bhoese) just posted a 54 at Cabo in this week's tourney... yup, that's right, an -18 round with unevens on a slopey course.

Granted it wasn't a perfect 18 (i.e. the Holy Grail of 18 straight birds or better), but given the lies that one can find there, this has to rank right up there with the best-ever UEL rounds.

Bad luck bk to post your best round in the Tour in the same week as Ben got hot. Ben just added a red-box uneven lie grid to his avatar: it seems to have helped ... he also took top honors in the high-stakes UEL RG at Cabo. Congrats Ben on some great shooting!

    Congratulations Ben - super shooting.

Uneven lies becoming a bit of a joke now - what next??   Uneven with starters from the tips?

Why don't you play them & try to understand it instead of keeping on with your negative criticising all the time Sara? Course management...yes, you need to plan your shot to the fairway to avoid difficult lies, is that so bloody hard to understand?

Some players can do that and are extremely good in the approach result, putting is another thing. Like in reality, luck is also part of the result; good bounces, flat lies, etc.

Everything is FLAT.....in flat lies but on greens, that is the main difference.

Afraid to get ridiculous rounds with UEL?, if so, I can understand why you do not play them.

edit....and big grats to Ben ;-)

He must have, I've never managed 18 under with flat lies, never mine uneven.  Brilliant play there.

This week was a major event for me.   Finishing above Mags, even if on a count back was pretty sweet.

So, with just 2 tournaments left in the Spring UEL Tour, here is an update based on the full results now in for wk22's tourney at Oakmont:

In the TL tier, GolferDadRB shot a fantastic -12 58 to win this week, his first win in this Tour (following an extraordinary number of second place finishes in the Winter tour). Sebicu graced us with his presence this week to finish 2nd place (for the 3rd time in three appearances in this tour!), alongside Andy (alcaucin), and Mags.

In Legend tier, mmyers0 produced his best round of the Tour to win by two with a 60, ahead of TheHaig1980, Corwyn, lisalovesthesun, and Martin333. His score propels him to the leading US Legend spot in the Ryder Cup credit standings, and should secure his place on the team.

Please note that now that we have 10 completed tourneys, the best 9 scores are now being calculated for those particular standings, so look and see which scores you may be able to supplant in these last couple of weeks to improve your position.

Ryder Cup qualification standings are still very close for the final places. Visit this thread to see the current situation for both Team USA and Team ROW in terms of which players among those declaring themselves as candidates are on track to qualify.

To see all the details view the spreadsheet, but for those who can't access the new Google Sheets, here are some snapshots of some of the Standings sheets here in the thread (note that they're only the top 35+ places, just what fits on my screen).

Thanks Corwyn, LOL, BK, and Mainz!

    MainzMan:

I've never managed 18 under with flat lies, never mine uneven.

I still haven't managed a -18 on the flats from the tips, either.  I reached -19 in the flat shorty tee Cabo RG a year ago when multiple players shot 49s, and -20 off the fronts at Kiawah.  From the big boy tees, I'd fallen short at the end several times, most recently in the GolfNow qualifier when I was -17 thru 16 and bogeyed the 17th.  That's been my deepest run at a true perfect 18.

I broke from my normal routine of playing the UEL tour event on Friday or Saturday because I had a fresh, quality round Wednesday night in squeaking out a tiebreaker win over poolmaniac in the 500cr RG.  I started par-bogey in that one, so it felt good when I drained a tricky 7.5 footer on 1 and I didn't at all mind barely missing a 14 foot eagle try after I was lucky enough to have my drive settle at perfect full 3W range on 2.

I pushed my drive into the sand on 3, got a relatively good lie, and was just competent enough with my out to leave a routine straight 8 footer for birdie.  Eagled the 4th thanks to a nice approach that again found a straight putting line.  I'll admit that I didn't have the greatest confidence in that shot...I had to add 8 yards to compensate for the downslope, and was afraid it would scream into the bunker or shoot off the back.  But it had a soft enough landing thanks to the elevation drop and WGT's unrealistic equipment.

The back half of the front 9 was a streak of uninteresting birdies...good lies, 8-12 foot putts on straight lines.  The trickiest putt was on 9 from 10.5 feet, but I lost the replay thanks to the "making the turn" ad glitch. I was extremely fortunate with my leaves on the front. The putts were no tougher than I'd expect at Bethpage.

The back began with a great chance for birdie from 125 with a nearly flat lie, but I missed my mark on the approach, then overpowered the 19 footer.  My slightly pushed drive on 11 barely avoided danger and almost crested the hill to roll close.  I think a dinged drive there had a chance to be perfect, but it would probably have caught the downslope on the fly and gone off the back.  I was happy to lag it close and take the birdie.

I eagled the 12th thanks to my longest putt of the night, a 28 foot triple-breaker that I've seen more than a few times.  I pulled a very makeable13 footer on 13, lipped in from 12 on 14 after a missed 83 punch, and eagled 15 thanks to my shot of the round, helped by the wind and the contour of the green.  16 and 17 were routine 10 foot birdies, again along nice, nearly straight lines, and there I was, a par away from 18 under.

I stuck my drive exactly where I wanted it, then butchered the PW to make bogey a lot more likely.  I went with a choked pitch for the up, but was so concerned with power and roll that I completely forgot to adjust for the sideslope of the lie and sent it down the slope.  Like the drive on 11, it might have been better to miss where I did...certainly in hindsight saving par from 15 feet is far better than possibly leaving the pitch above the hole had I hit it to a higher apex as I imagined it.

So that was it.  I'm still not sure that anything on Cabo can truly count as being "from the tips" in the same way as it is on the Open courses, not with its six eagle opportunities, but it was still a lot of fun and extremely satisfying...even if Konrad or Seb should happen to top it.

Great stuff, Ben! Thank you so much for taking the time to share all this wonderful detail. You've given us a fascinating picture of the skill and strategy (and a little bit of luck), that's part of an outstanding round.

Had another solid 60 this week. A little disappointing as I had no eagles and missed birdie putts inside 10 feet on 10, 14, and 17 (two inside 6 feet), and I also missed the ding on #6 just enough that I landed outside the flat zone and missed the putt. But I did manage a birdie on 18 so all was not lost.

Great shooting again mm, and congrats on another win!

I really should have caught you this week... I was coming down the 15th at -11 in good position to attack for eagle but completely lost focus from then on, lol! In my defense, I was being interrupted every couple of minutes by my son, who'd volunteered to make breakfast and got up early to do it, only to bombard me with questions about the recipe and where to find things. I proceeded to give away 5, maybe even 6, shots on the remaining holes (including a calculation putting error on 17, and then, needing birdie to tie the lead, I made the monumental course management risk of trying the beach route on 18... I wouldn't recommend it!)

So, now we enter the final week of the UEL Spring Tour... at Kiawah.

Best of luck to everyone chasing an improved finishing position in the different categories, and to those seeking a Ryder-Cup team spot.
