I've never asked to be anyone's friend but have always clicked accept when been asked myself. However I now see no point in it at all, I don't know any of them personally and have only been invited to play by one, an amateur who invited me to play two 9 hole games and forfeited half way through, twice. I have invited several over the past few weeks and got no response whatsoever. I have now decided to remove them all (about 20) as It appears to be a waste of effort.
