swoods, more pure back spin should be straighter shot under low wind conditions, since the more back spin you can put on the ball means the lower amount of side spins (i.e. draw, fade), correct?  But more back spin will also air the ball more, exposing it to the winds.  So a knockdown shot on SA from 100yds out, will be bullied by the winds a lot less than a sky'd sandwedge that will have a high amount of back spin.

If they offered a driving range for practice.. this would be easy to determine.. we could set up for heavy winds and hit several shots with back spin, several with no spin, and several with top spin and get the yardages.. As you rarely get the same shot twice with the same clubs into the same winds .. and never back to back.. it makes it very difficult to determine.

However, I do know from a golf video.. head winds or side winds.. a lower trajectory is going to increase control.. and prevent the ball from "stalling" in a head wind.. still not desired if you are shooting to a higher elevation though...

You seem to have this down to a science. I find the standard clubs (starters) don't seem to generate much spin. Do I need 'better' clubs for more spin? And I've noticed one or more players shots that actually seem to have 'side' spin. The shot hits and jumps slightly to the left or right in addition to the backspin. Is there a technique to get that kind of spin? Thanks!

Yes. The more dots on the ball and the club the better the spin.

As for the side spin that's just the way the game does it. The roll after landing is affected by the slope the ball  lands on and the wind direction. Putts that spin sideways usually are on some type of incline and generally head in the direction of the wind. They don't always reverse direction on the shot line.

    AlaCowboy:

Backspin will take a bit of distance off iron shots. But remember that putting backspin on the ball to stop it requires both better clubs and better balls. The free WGT ball is not good for backspin.

I agree with most of this, however, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the level 76 Cleveland 56d wedge DOES in fact back up a starter ball reliably.  Since I made that discovery, I have stopped buying golf balls, as the biggest issue I had with starter balls was their irritating willingness to roll on and on off of a wedge shot.
