    SweetiePie:

    BolloxInBruges:

I full backspin all my drives up to 12 mph headwind on kia and BP (except 10 kia),  Def carries further, and you don't get much roll on kia/BP no matter what spin you use.

You know it! I likewise do so. But what is needed here most of the time is what a top player would do with the green driver, freebie irons & putter and free balls, as advice, beyond club/ball upgrades and what they do with same.

Instead of spending time trying to figure out what to say to me, just read the above in proper context. I seek no issues with those I admire but have no compunction when it comes to clearity or correction. I am a big fan of you both...that is true..SP

Jeez SP-I'm getting a headache trying to understand what you're saying. You quote yourself and then quote yourself quoting yourself. Please explain without quoting anybody what you are trying to say. The clarity isn't evident to to me. Tx.

Ok. I'm sorry. Just start at the beginning of this forum post, subtract all of the complicated advice, hold on to mine and all will be once again square. Please, indulge me.

Good one honey!  We're both blessed with the verbal arts but now you want to bring math into the equation (pardon the pun).  I declare you the winner!  Over and out.  ;-)

I love you both, you are true gentlemen. Forgive my talk...it is only what was given to me by Tibbets back in the day when we all played with K-Mart clubs...again, I am sorry.

    OaktheToke:

LOL at some defying physics.  I guess it certainly possible in virtual world of the WGT matrix.   Do you want the red pill or the blue?

A good read for those curious about spin and ball flight

Hehheh! Oak, believe me... I am one who is fully aware of how a slice and hook are created... in real world golf. I'm afflicted with these physics nearly every round I play, and pity those who don't realize what's happening - when it happens - to know how to rectify it.

Similarly, as a former ball player (center field/pitcher), I realized (and my teammates did) that my throws to the infield and plate would come in at a predictable curve because of the spin I put on the ball.

I don't know WHY what's happening here happens, but I wish it would stop, because it DOESN'T make sense. I'm using the GI-D ball, btw... but can't imagine that it is the culprit.

In light of the "mild uproar" created in the thread, and just to clarify... my main suggestion is this: Anyone who feels the need for guidance about how spin affects the flight of the ball - here at WGT - SHOULD visit the practice area to learn for themselves the effects of spin on their chosen ball.

BTW, Oak... seems like a great "real world golf" link. I perused it briefly and will revisit it when time allows, and suggest everyone do the same.

And I'll take the Blue pill... errrr... the Red one... errrr...

Conclusion: Backspin makes shots go straighter

OK...Just tested this out on Kaiwah - 1 - low wind conditions.

    1. Played no spin with TM R9, aimed center of f/w and deliberately dinged the line to the right of the center line => Result: Ball in the sand

    2. All other things same but this time full backspin => Result: Ball on the right side of fairway

Confirms what I suspected about backspin. As in the real world the more backspin you can impart , the straighter the ball flies.

However, my guess is that mishits on full backspin irons can cause significant distance loss - so there is a trade off for mishits with irons...distance loss vs. direction loss. Take your pick based on what the hole demands.

infinito hit the nail on the head.  You cannot topspin a golf ball, you can only decrease the back spin.  All clubs have a open face of at least 8.5deg, going all the way up to 64 degrees.  You cannot impart a true topspin, like which is produced by tennis racquets.  The best you can do is bring the back spin down.  This game is not set up for it, but a draw is going to be the closest thing to topspin.  You in the case of into the wind, less backspin, means the ball boring through the air with the spin limiting the affects of the wind, but not eliminating them.  So the ball will travel further.  A steep, sharp swing will impart the most backspin on the ball, which will climb the air so to speak, while that means the most hangtime, it doesnt always mean the most distance.

In real golf you can tee the ball up, while I am not an expert in golf physics, in a down wind to get the most beneficial ball flight and spin.  Tee the ball down, will produce a more penetrating low ball flight.

In fact I would like to add that to the list of suggestions.  Along with draw, fade, and angles lies, please add tee height.
