Hi gang my 60 year old father and I have very few opportunities to "hang out" and I found your ap on Facebook so we figured we would give it a go.  We have been playing for over a month now and there are certain aspects of the game that just feel broken.

Rough play is wildly off....you can have 2 exactly the same shots that end up going very shot on the first try and flying over the green on the other....and before you ask I am a 38 year old gamer who can hit the ball straight most of the time and I know the logistics of club, pitch, etc.....but it still gives you almost random ending results.

One of my biggest issues is the par 4s that when I hit 2 perfect shots I still can't reach the green.  Perfect power and contact but can't even get a chance at a birdie without chipping it in...several holes on various courses.

The greens run no matter how much backspin (regular equipment) and even when the slope is up hill.  I can hit a chip, flop, pitch short of the pin and it will run in some cases double the club distance even with an uphill slope???

Credits....ok I know you guys are not a non profit organization but you give no casual beginning players a reasonable shot to earn or win these.  With all the other issues within the game why would anybody spend money?

This game has potential but there are certain tweaks you really need to make to give yourself a chance an having people spend money here.  I am an admin for a parents gaming website and I have to do reviews on this kind game and have hundreds of members that depend on those reviews.  I do not want to give them a review until I see what efforts the developers take in replying and correcting issues with the game.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to your response.

I am not from WGT, just a player here almost a year.  I'm not so sure I would trust the opinion of a reviewer that hadn't actually tried the game past the basic FREE level. It doesn't cost anything to play but you know you get what you pay for.

Your observations are quite valid. Everybody that tries this has the exact same complaint. However, as a dutiful reviewer, you might want to read back in the forums a bit at some of the reactions by players here to your very observations. Then read some more about WGT and how far they've come in 2+ years. Search for specific complaints and read how they are handled. That will give you more than enough to make an almost educated review.

The real review is the one that actually happens after the goods have been sampled, so to speak. Spend a couple of dollars and see the difference, then review it. JMO :-)

I havent noticed what you are saying about the rough.  The shots I hit are pretty normal from one to the other if the rough % is the same.  There can be some variation in distance which I accept seeing how the rough is a range % not on the number %.  In real life, this is often the same, sometimes you catch the ball cleanly and sometimes a little more grass is on the club, but the yardages to me are in range with the rough % range.

I will agree with the par 4's.  Sometimes only the wind will make a shot possible to hit the green.  I dont particularly like that.  The only defense is that these ridiculous 500 plus yard 4's in US Open courses do make it impossible for many real pro's to reach them.  So in that aspect this game is reflecting real life (but hole 5, 9, 15 on BPB I can hit and hold them easily in real life)

credits well, gonna disagree with you on this.  For a free game, it offers free play, and free tournaments to earn small credits.  If they made it easier for you, that is not fair to the paying players like me and many others who have donated some funds for a better set of clubs and balls.

I will also agree with you on the short game stuff, if you review the help to the right side of the page it will help you a long way, but it will never play like real life would, its honestly just way to difficult to factor things in like "feel".  No pro in real life hits the same shot from the same spot as any other pro would, more spin, less spin, dead spin, hands forward, hands back, ball forward in stance, ball back, bump and run, pitch, chip, chip with 9 iron, chip with SW, flop, wristy, bladed PW putt off the fringe.  There are too many options for short game, that a computer model cannot master.  Every TW game had the same flaw.  On the brightside all the discrepencies you see are fairly regular hole to hole, you wont have 2 flat chips act completely different, just make sure to check your landing zone, as the topography of that spot can influence your shot more than anything else (similar to real life)

    Welcome to WGT!

I had problems with the same things your experiencing. I feel your pain (IFYP)!

Your scoring avg is pretty good with the basic free clubs, your problems out of the rough are partly true, yet this inconsistency problem your having can be rationalized.

I played a lot of real golf over many years. I was a 7 h.d.c.p. on a difficult course in my golfing prime. The course I played on had deep rough, Poa Anna grass, very sticky. As a result, my short irons would come out with a certain amount of consistency, however, the longer irons would never come out nearly the same. This randomness, while frustrating is IMHO is very realistic. The good news is, clubs with higher degrees of precision are better, but still react unpredictably with longer clubs. This is consistent with the real world. Again this is just my humble opinion.

Many people don't want to spend money here, they don't have extra, or there priorities are different. WGT has tried to give those folks a free place to play. remember, when your setting up a game, set it up for people with like skills. You will be competitive with each other.

As your experience really starts coming into play, your going to see the need to buck up a few dollars and improve your set. It costs WGT a great deal of money to build these HD. courses. I wont get into the specifics. WGT needs our support to keep bringing new courses into the fold. Oakmont and the back 9 of St. Andrews will be open to the public starting June 1st. WGT has recently made exclusive agreement with both the USGA and the R&A for courses and virtual opens. Again exciting stuff.  This is my golf outlet. Im handicapped with a bad back and cant play in real life. This is my outlet.

Good luck! Keep playing, you will be surprised how good you get at this game..but stay away from Death Page until your better equipped. 8)

You can play and enjoy it for free, especially if the group you are playing with is using the same equipment. If you are playing with folks with better equipment, it is frustrating but that is your choice. Regarding the rough, I agree. At Kiawah for example, in real life the rough is very light and on the game you can be 6 inches off the fairway in 40% rough, same is true at St Andrews. I agree that when you hit out of it the result should be inconsistent but more thought should given to the rough being less severe that it is that close to the fairway.

I bought all kinds of new clubs that were suppose to have more forgiveness especially the new putter, but same old ***! Missing short puts, the greens are almost impossible to read, the same looking put on one hole goes 10 feet on the next it goes 40 feet! The spin meter doesn't even work! Sometimes the shot doesn't even go where you aim it! I had four lip-outs on one hole! I feel like I wasted money this game needs allot of work, and I've been playing it for quite some time now, so I no what I'm talking about!

7 ranked rounds and one month is not what I would call 'quite a while'

This game is programed down to the dirt. By this I mean the sand types and grass types differ and react differently from course to course.

A bunker shot on Kiawah will not play the same as a bunker shot on BPB. Same with the rough. Hit a 40-50% lie and BPB and then try the same shot from the same lie at Oakmont.

IRL there are bunkers that are a good safety shot and some that must be avoided at all costs. If you short side yourself.....good luck.

One of the cardinal rules in golf is do not try and fix a bad shot with a miracle shot (unless you are Phil at the masters that is.......damn eagle from the trees).

At the end of the day the only way to get better is to play, play, play, and learn the courses. Learn what you can and cannot do.

    Happy hitting

Two Years, why would it take two years to get anywhere with this game, nobody is going to wait to years to get anywhere with a game! I've played this game for sometime now and I have spent some money buying different Items and it hasn't improved the game much! I am never going to spend anymore money on this game because there are to many inconsistencies! I played 9 tournament holes at the Open and every hole the wind was in my face off the tee-box. I don't care where you golf that is virtually impossible! Or that would be the longest stretch of golf course holes on the planet. That's about 3600 yds of holes in almost a straight line!

There are 18 different wind scenarios for the course. Each one is independent of the other for obvious reasons not the least of which is you going and playing it then telling me what the wind was so I could be prepared. Granted, it would have to be a concerted effort to do this but with random winds by hole that makes the point moot.

Andyson and Bollux have interesting says about this here....
