    PUHOLINO:

W XP requires ZERO maintenance, works well with ANY browser and performs PERFECTLY EVERY DAMN TIME.

My cache is cleard daily, as is flash cache, my system is optimal based on the FAQ's, yet in multiple player games this is what I experience as do some of the member I often play with .

That may be part of your problem. WGT says unless you are having serious problems with the game only clear your cache after an update. Clearing your cache too often can cause as many if not more problems than not clearing it often enough. Every time you clear your cache you remove all the course data that was stored in both your flash cache and browser cache and it takes time to put it back in which makes the game load slower because it is rebuilding your cache each time you play. And anything that puts stress on your browser can cause meter problems.

Well, I can only speak from my own experience and I'm 3 for 3 with XP (and absolutely ZERO maintenance). I played on at least 10 machines with different OS (W7, 8 and Vista), all of them more powerful, and they never came within a country mile to 3 old filthy PCs with W XP, when it came to WGT performance. I'm sorry if your experience is different, mine's not.

P.S.: But it's true that I prefer to use IE (all those 3 only have that browser installed). Needless to say, you shouldn't do anything else on the computer while playing and it's a good idea to to cut down on some processes, working in the background (anti virus updates, etc)

when in reality, achieving a near-flawless meter mainly comes down to: browser maintenance.

To a degree. But my meter success has come from proper OS maintenance. Shaving CPU programs and applications with any OS will almost always give the best meter results. Of course there has to be proper browser maintenance as well.

    Also:

    Stop unneeded services

    Turn off Windows features

    Uninstall programs not in use

    Regularly perform Disc clean-up

    Defrag weekly (set a schedule)

Regularly use a Windows utilities like Ccleaner, Winutilities or Glarysoft

Delete pre-installed software that only runs continuously in the background

Use an Anti-virus program that runs silently in the background

I've upgraded my OS to Windows 8 and the performance increases over Windows 7 is remarkable.

I started playing this game with Vista Home Basic OS, and my meter was a mess. As I learned how to optimize Vista, and Windows 7, my meter greatly improved.

Thanks BTB, I wasn't aware of that

Regarding Flash updates, I received notice of a new one a few days ago. I did not allow it to install, so I can't speak for its efficacy. I'll install it one of these days and check it out.

Regarding browser cache, it is supposed to store an item. When that item is accessed again, it is supposed to check the original source (at the URL) and compare its date/time to the cached version. If the original hasn't been changed, the cached version is supposed to be used, thereby cutting out the time to download the item.

THIS DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK PROPERLY. Many times, when I am designing a web page, I'll change the original but the browsers will continue to try to use the cached version. I have to manually clear the cache to get the new version. If you're having meter problems, go ahead and clear the cache. It may or may not help.

When you load a page, the page will normally refer to other objects (graphics, scripts, style sheets, etc.). These are loaded on separate connections. Nowadays the separate connections usually are run by separate threads (a thread is a sort of mini-process). Consequently, even though the graphics for a new stroke have been loaded and displayed, additional activity may still be taking place. This is why waiting to start the stroke until activity has calmed down may be beneficial. A look at your cpu activity is beneficial in this case. You can also check your network activity; however, it is usually also visible as cpu activity.
