Long ago I noticed the 8 iron was nearly impossible... it still is.... I can get more distance with it against the wind if I use full bs that if I use the 7i with full bs.

Now why is it that I had a 14 mph headwind and I was trying to approach Hole 17 at Saint Andrews... Used my 3w with full bs.. and the club went 227.... and rolled, but when I try to reach the same distance over the bunkers, like Kiawah 2... the same club one day lands long but next it doesn't go passed 230 with tailwind?

I always use full spin on 8i.  Yes a few shots It might go 152+ yards instead of the normal 146,147 but over all I find it o.k.  Best to take a fraction off power for best results.

What makes the club INACCURATE is when you use a touch above full spin.  I can control all my other clubs perfectly with any amount of spin, but the 150 8 iron will go any where between 150 and 159 even in headwind .  Plenty of times I've had 150 to pin 10 mph headwind and i use 150 iron with a touch over full spin and i get 157 yards!!

Hole #2 at Olympic Is one of the biggest hit & miss inaccurate holes you will get with 8 iron.  It seems to make wind and elevation obsolete

It's my contention the shots in this game are scripted and the people who regularly shoot tremendous, low scores simply have their shots memorized, regardless of the club. I know there are 3 9's in this game I don't even have to look at the yardage. I can play them fast and shoot low almost every time. Please stop trying to bring some sensibility to all of it...lol

And for all of you who say, "You still have to swing the club", I say you're right. But don't think your ability to hit the ding matters as much as you'd like to think. In fact, when i hit the ding, I feel my shots are MORE erratic than when I play my usual push/pull method depending on wind direction. I actually try to hit the front side or back side of the ding 90% of the time. If you hit the ding, it impacts distance and spin on most clubs, and since I miss the ding a LOT more than I hit it, I simply use my ability to miss it.

Also, I've adapted my game such that I use less and less spin on all shots. They tend to drift less as a result and as long as I'm pretty close to the ding (see above), all my shots still bite relatively well, with a strong tailwind the only real exception.

I use half back on almost all my drives and 1/4-1/2 on most all my irons and none on my wedges. I decided to simplify this game a bit by reducing some of the variables and it's helped me tremendously. It still is no substitute for shot memorization (or rather, memorizing ball flight characteristics on certain shots).
