  Svchost (or taskhost) is a helper process for running a number of other applications. It may be running good stuff or bad stuff.

  You can plug a process name into Google and find out what it is. Most sites that will tell you will ALSO want to run a "scan" on your machine. It's not a good idea to let them do so.

  Programs like Ad-Aware and Spybot will detect non-viral things you don't want. Spybot will also help you control start-ups and processes under its TOOLS section if you don't know, independently, about those things.

  In general, browser bars, shopping buddies, stuff like that are undesirable; many will hijack your browser. IE, in particular, is bad about accumulating a bunch of that stuff.

  I find the "game mode" on my free comodo internet security (including anti virus) very handy. When I select that, it doesn't try to update or anything like that (though it keeps doing it's main job), so my meter will not be surprised by my AV connecting to the internet.

  I've been using Avast! free for about 4 yrs. It updates automatically when ever it wishes, and it does not cause me a problem. I run XP pro on a 4-5 yr old system that I have tweaked to a great extent. On boot up its is fast and when it boot is finished and cpu settles to about 2% there are 25 processes running. I have been running Skype live, have a pin-it prog, a pop-p calendar and do not have issues caused by these. The system has a dual-core processor at 2.66 mz and 4 gig of ram using a Gigabyte motherboard. Cpu usage is very small while playing and a lot of times I may even have multiple browsers open. Chrome will up cpu usage some, but does not cause problems. You have to be very careful eliminating processes if you don't know what they are really used for. The other os will not run by cutting down to what xp will, so don't just start disabling services in control panel, you will make your system unusable and not boot.
