It's easier to make friends in a smaller pool, and in a good club you'll have a larger selection of competitions. We are currently running 23 different competitions including 2 inter-club games. It's important to choose one that suits you, as the time zones may cause a problem or even the language. If it wasn't for clubs I'd have left the game months ago as it can seem stale once you tire of the 7 courses.

Most clubs have both free and for credit tournys plus alt-shot, match-play and specials for when the majors are on. Some clubs allow all members to start their own and some don't, I do. Personally I set the for credit tournys to the level where I get the most entries. It's no use charging 50 credit entry fees if nobody plays them. I also have comps for the different tiers to keep them involved which have balls as prizes, and I'm sure others do the same.
