Thanks for the feedback....this is very helpful to me....i'm a pitch kind of guy...and i'm pretty darn accurate with it....i just see alot of golfers chipping and i just kinda wondered if i was the oddball on this....the flop shot....i tried it once and i vowed to never try it again  lol.....but i think what was said about the pitch will help me become even better with that part of my game....and yes i'd whole lot rather have a tap in as bad as my putting is  LOL

Steven - I think you would be better off with another wedge and get rid of the hybrid.

It will add 4 shots more to your short game.

I use every option except for chip haha, and I have 4 wedges.. including PW.

    - I agree with OEJ above, extra wedge better than hybrid, with the punch option from 3W and 3i, hybrid shouldnt be needed much at all.

Merion! I love the course. It is unforgiving, but a REAL challenge and a course that will take time to learn.  It is obviously a placement course, and one where you have to really know where to place the ball on the approach and on the greens. I've only played it a few times, but know I'll be spending a lot of time there.

I got into some 70/80% on the 18th hole ruining a good round.

12 under going into 18, had a little side wind and tried to go at the pin to get that 13 under score that I thought is needed to qualify.  Came up just short and right into the deep grass around the bunker.  Could not move it on my first shot, second shot I hit about 8 feet by the hole and missed that for a double bogey and back down to 10 under.

The rough around the greens is very tough to handle and the fact that many of the pins are on slopes or places that don't allow you to let a shot run out a little make it tough to get up and down.  To score you basically have to hit every fairway and green and avoid any shot that might get you into trouble.  It's hard enough to execute the shots without trying for the little extra to get you close on this course, hence my double on 18.

I think the winner here this year will the person who best manages the course and the position of the ball on the greens.  I played a couple of rounds at championship green speed and this course plays very different at that speed.  The qualifying has a speed that seems a hybrid of very fast and TM tournament, even still there are many subtle little breaks that are tough to manage.  On the higher speed, they become even more difficult if you get on the wrong side of the pin.

Hopefully the two rounds of the Open will feature either high winds and / or championship green speed to make this a real test.

    ADYTHEGOLFPRO:

I am having big issues with getting out of the moderate to heavy rough around the Merion Greens. Nothing seems to work and I end up wasting two, three or four shots.

No offense, but welcome to a TRUE US Open course setup.  Merion plays the way it should.

On WGT, however, in thick stuff, punches are your friend.  Pitches work "ok."  Flops are a no-no most times.  When it doubt, punch it out.

Ho hum, light brush. 8th Merion. 78 yrds dowhill 12 ft or something with a 10 mph wind behind. 75 yrd wedge hit at 73 with half back spin. came up short which was the first wgt crime, in the light brush. Tried every shot in the bag having decided after 2 attempts that I was going to withdraw. flop, pitch, punch, chip. Not one moved it an inch. Turned and hit from the same stuff backwards into the bunker. So when in doubt, options, withdraw
