lol, played my first round yesterday, was 7 under when i got to the par three13th, hit just and l mean just over the green and was in 70-80% rough, ended up with a '9', tried everything, pitch, flop, punch, it can and will be brutal

I am having big issues with getting out of the moderate to heavy rough around the Merion Greens. Nothing seems to work and I end up wasting two, three or four shots.

hey steven, I hung on to my starter lob wedge and use it around the green and out of bunkers  I  use the full swing with the red dot low on the ball holed out plenty and hit lots of flagsticks too generaly speaking I usually end up inside 3ft  even on the fairway you have to add yardage but after a little practice i have become proficient at it  hope this helps I know how frustrating this game can be. BTW i use the reverse putter angle to aim so i get a good look at the landing area and break for the roll out

I was in the same position yesterday,-6 on the 14th in Merion. My drive went near the sand trap on the right and I think I was in 60%+ mulch or brush(not one for taking notes)with still a long distance to go for the green.Anyway I know about the punch shot (tyvm timbo)and thats what I used but I only went about 25 yards with the wedge and I do have good wedges but I ended up staying in the 40-50% rough. From there I'm ok I'm used to the 40-50% rough and I ended up bogeying the hole witch was almost like a birdie at this point.

I was just wondering about the thick mulch and brush. How much total distance can you hope from there and what club to use.Maybe the best play is to wedge it sideways and get back on the fairway.ty

Just Off the green in 40/50 rough.... Flop Shot ..Full b/spin... and I use the 8-10 yrd more rule... depending on downhill or uphill to hole.

Geez i can't remember which hole....  I think it's the big par5 on the front9....  2nd shot it's hard to get over the big bunker and weeds around it....

I aim straight for it.....  if your lucky...you get the kick off the weeds and carry towards the green....  or land in bunker and weeds...

Only a 48yrd shot to green if you do.... that's about a 70yrd full shot with Cleavland wedges and dot just under normal

Ok..this maybe a thread of its on.....or i maybe opening a can of worms...chip vs. pitch around greens....whichis a preferred method of getting closer to the hole...and i would prefer not some smarta** answer...i'm serious about this because i tend to struggle with this...i can pitch pretty dang good....but sometimes its not good coic...but then when i chip...and i rarely do....i go way past the hole eveno a choked down shot...and some holes....where theres a rough  area to prevent running balls on the green i might or might not even get a foot on the green with a chip....i would reaolly like some feedback on this...thanks!!

I think you'll find the general consensus is to pitch, I never use the chip option, I always pitch it. If your ball lies on the fairway or fringe, and you have a ball that spins quite a bit like a nike, you must hit harder than expected, eg. hit 12yards full B/s to go 7 yards. If your ball lies in the rough with the pitch open, it will run-out more, and spin much less.

as usual, trial and error is key, but I'm very confident with the 'pitch' option, and always trust myself to get up and down if need be

Personally I never use Chip or Pitch when around the greens, either in rough or on the fairway. I always use the Flop because I know exactly what the ball is going to do, having practised and perfected it. You can just throw the ball right to the hole with max backspin and it stops dead for a tap-in.

Well I never pitch and hardly ever chip. There's more than one way to skin a cat. (Does anybody require a skinless cat?)

I'll have a look in the freezer and let you know around tea time Courteney :-)

    Ok You two.....lol

    Can I say... I will anyway...lol

The only time I chip, is on the fringe... close to hole...

I don't use the Puch Shot... not yet anyway.

6 to 40 yrds I would use the Flop Shot......   the 6-10 yrds.... depends on rough or I use Chip.

It Really doesn't matter what shot you use.... if it's working...stick to it :)
