Additionally, do not try to "pick the ball up" with your longer irons.

I'd suggest putting the 3/4/5 irons away for a bit and get some hybrids as they are more forgiving and easier to get into the air.

Most players now do just that. But I have as of yet never found a hybrid that I liked. I would much rather hit a 3 4 or 5 iron and I still carry a 1 iron.

    chrisironsbones:

I'm not much of a golfer but a friend of mine is very keen.  He was selling his G20's to get new clubs (very keen!) so i decided to buy them and went the whole hog and bought 2 decent brand new nike wedges too which i got for half price £49 (roughly under $80) each which i thought was a good deal (maybe it was, maybe it wasn't as i dont study the golf equipment market) Finally i bought a used driver and was well looking forward to my first round in years at the amazing RSG lookalike course of Royal St Davids, Harlech (but with better views)

Although my first round was an embarrassing 28 over par. LOLOL..:( i still enjoyed being out on a PROPER course even with a 97, should have played the ladies tees!!)  But what i would like to get a few tips on would probably improve my game a heck of a lot.

When i take a shot with my wedges, and irons down to around the 7 iron i get very decen loft and pull off amazing shots yardage and height-wise and saves my rounds, but when it comes to mid, long irons or driver every shot is like its a PUNCHED shot and the ball never raises more than 6 feet off the ground (at best.lol) and usually will skip along the fairway like some one throwing a piece of slate across a lake!  Yes i know the club heads are more lofted on shorter irons but what am i doing wrong with the swing on my longish irons to ALWAYS take a punch shot rather than a more lofted shot????  (i get away with it on the links course but i'm dreading playing my local mountain course this weekend after what i witnessed last weekend???

For starter rule of thumb m8, driver and 3 wood play off of left heel, mid irons and wedges centre of feet, long irons inbetween left heel and center, get use to that, then if you want irons to go higher move ball  up towards left heel, lower come bk off centre a bit. for me i found towards left heel helps me to drive though the ball, bt everyone plays different

Thanks BB...and I'm with you. I have fiddled and experimented with several different hybrids and have yet to find one that has any feel, feedback or consistancy. I'll stick to what I have used since age 16 (25 now), Mizuno M29 blades.

Thanks guys i was playing every shot long and short irons from middle of feet so thats why i was getting away with it with shorter clubs, I went to the local 9 hole mountain course a mile up the road (where there's fences round the greens to keep out the sheep) and was making 60% of the long irons, (compared to 10% on the weekend) I even tried to be clever and drive the lake on the 7th.  Must have had a meter skip in my swing as it was the biggest slice ever, maybe the pressure of losing a ball makes it a bit tougher lol. Any way i'm getting more confident and relaxed with every thing..nice 1 all for the tips, I'll be playing matchplay challenge with my friend before long (although he's been to nearly every decent course in the land and will probably skin me alive) Hope he too gets a dodgy meter that day
