I'm not much of a golfer but a friend of mine is very keen.  He was selling his G20's to get new clubs (very keen!) so i decided to buy them and went the whole hog and bought 2 decent brand new nike wedges too which i got for half price £49 (roughly under $80) each which i thought was a good deal (maybe it was, maybe it wasn't as i dont study the golf equipment market) Finally i bought a used driver and was well looking forward to my first round in years at the amazing RSG lookalike course of Royal St Davids, Harlech (but with better views)

Although my first round was an embarrassing 28 over par. LOLOL..:( i still enjoyed being out on a PROPER course even with a 97, should have played the ladies tees!!)  But what i would like to get a few tips on would probably improve my game a heck of a lot.

When i take a shot with my wedges, and irons down to around the 7 iron i get very decen loft and pull off amazing shots yardage and height-wise and saves my rounds, but when it comes to mid, long irons or driver every shot is like its a PUNCHED shot and the ball never raises more than 6 feet off the ground (at best.lol) and usually will skip along the fairway like some one throwing a piece of slate across a lake!  Yes i know the club heads are more lofted on shorter irons but what am i doing wrong with the swing on my longish irons to ALWAYS take a punch shot rather than a more lofted shot????  (i get away with it on the links course but i'm dreading playing my local mountain course this weekend after what i witnessed last weekend???

The position of the ball in your stance-it sounds like it's too far back.

Look at where the divots come from-in front of the ball. Picture the arc of the swing and how it relates to taking a divot that comes from in front of the lie. The club is digging into the ground after where the ball lies because you're forcing the ball to climb the face of the club. If it's too far back in your stance you'll be coming down on it at too steep of an angle and will tend to drive it into the ground or come out flat.

Yes sounds about right, as all my practicing with the local pro years ago when i was a young boy had been rubbed from my mind for ever, so was only guessing to what was right & wrong.  But yes, the ball seemed to always be in the middle of my feet (thought this was the correct way as the wedges and shorter irons were working fine from same position)  TY, I'll go and test it out later from my garden with a load of WGT starter balls (similar to a box of recovered lake balls) as i only have a field at back see if it works better

Bang on the money, plenty of times i would be hitting into the ground first, i put it down to my rusty, 5hit swing and not playing in years, so i get what your saying if ball  was slightly forward i wouldn't be forcing the club on an unusual angle to try and get under the ball, there would be more of a "flow" to it if ball was further forward and i would be catching it on the clubs natural up swing rather than me forcing the issue in trying to get under it.

The ball can be centered but if your hand position is wrong you will affect the hit. Hands forward will get a flat shot.

Its a different world out there than just having to click the mouse.  97 on a par 69 sounds well bad,, but i'll go back soon and see if i can get only a bogey per hole. But a beginer probably has a high handicap to negate this, what i am i wouldn't know but This wgt deviation is nothing compared to real life deviation.

Chris there are many golfers who would be happy with a 97. There are many many that have never even come close to breaking 100.

With wedges and short irons, the success is mostly due to the shorter distance view the mind has learned. With long irons & the driver, due to the distance needed, the mind gets fooled into believing additives must be applied to gain the requirement of the distance at hand. Muscles, tension and a tighter grip show up to be helpers which they are not. Try to be loose as a goose, starting with a grip you might use if you were holding a couple of baby birds in your hands and take the club back very slowly and relaxed getting your left shoulder under your chin and swing down at what seems to be the same tempo as the slow backswing, and merely sweep the ground as if with a broom, contacting the ball first then the grass. Finish with hands high.

Yes, another mistake i was making.  thinking i needed more power on the longer clubs forcing a faster downswing. Will go for a slower swing too as I've all ready seen an improvement after hitting a few balls in garden with ball further forward, TY, YJ.
