  That is what I thought most folks would be saying - the putter.  Seems like consensus is the wedge in this thread.  Do folks really think the wedge is a more important upgrade than the putter?

  In fairness, that's a slightly different question.

  The OP question was "if you only bought one L35+ club" I read that as total in the whole of your career and went for the R1, the majority went for a wedge.

  If I had a bag full of starter clubs then the least bad of them is the putter, so that wouldn't be my choice of the 'only' club to change.

  Yes I do.

  John addressed the Starter putter's quality, and, from my career, I'd add that the development of personal skills of a noob may be much more important than the better characteristics of a custom putter. Later, a player will be able to see that a Rossa is better than a Spider - same for better putters.

  Another look towards the Starter wedges reveals that they are among the worst Starter clubs. They lack precision, trajectory and spin. Chip, pitch and flop are as difficult to execute as throttled shots. Plus, it's quite unexpensive to bring more fun to the game with two lvl 42 Pings @200 crs each. They allow for good shots to the vincinity of the hole with short roll, while Starter shots seem to roll forever.or to land short (cf. STA#6).

  Simple answer is one single club will do little to actually vastly improve your game. Yes a driver will give more distance (so I would personally opt for a good 3W which would give more options).

  1 Wedge alone will not change enough -  you  would need 2 wedges to really see a marked improvement.

  Yes a putter would help, but the starters is not too bad if you can get the ball closer (via 2 wedges).

  Basically this game is addictive, and IMHO is worth spending money on, as the better the clubs you will possibly get more enjoyment. 

  But once you buy one club, I would be surprised if thats the only purchase you would make.

  +1 Alan. For me, this discussion is quite academic but nevertheless useful. Disregarding level restrictions, it's close to "which club to buy first?".

  I think, any dedicated player who enhances his game with any reasonable custom club will make Master earlier than he thinks => shopping time!
