a 400 yrd+ drive finally got 405 hole 10 at st andys with a 28/31 mph back wind , was i credited with it ?....NO...

If it landed in the rough or u were playing a practice round (although I doubt it ) u wouldn't get credit for it.It  happened to me although wasn't  a 400 yrder but at the time a personal best   And the dots are for longer distances, more is better

It ended up in the rough, has to be fairway or green to count.

just to expand a little on Andy's correct assessment/response:

there can be a huge variation (like 50+ yds) even when driving the same ball, on the same fairway, and under the same wind conditions.

This is especially true on StA course with smooth rolling hills and slopes going in all directions.  Balls can land within a few yards of each other and experience different downhill, uphill or side slopes with results like no-bounce "burials" to spectacular "trampoline" shots that act like someone is skipping stones across a lake.  I've even seen balls almost turn at a right angles due to weird bounces.

Elsewhere in the forum you will find great club performance comparisons which show quite a bit of variation even using the same ball.  And these tests are tough under the best of conditions using pretty flat fairways, no wind, 100% dings and accurate clubs.

Unlucky with your Drive, you overshot the green and went into the rough which doesn't count. The Drive has to stay on the Fairway or Green to count!  Importantly YOU know and WE know you've DONE IT!!!!!   WELL DONE!!!!   (Wish I could hit a 400yd Drive recorded or not).................

That's where I finally got over 400. Need to keep it left where there's more FW. BTW fringe doesn't count. I had a 402 there a few days before.
