The number before your name is your current Level; attained through the accumulation of XP points.
I'm sure there are discussions about it around here somewhere.

Your Level (currently 44) allows you to access new equipment from the Pro Shop as you progress in experience. When you look in the Pro Shop you will see some items are available to you, and some are ghosted out (unavailable).
