    Do the qualities of balls simply add to the qualities of the club?

    for instance a spin of 3.5 on club and 2.0 on ball = 5.5 spin?

    Thanks

    Yes, but not so directly.

    The 2 values do compliment each other. Wind direction and speed, landing slope (upgrade/downgrade), terrain type (fairway/rough) uphill/downhill roll, Ding hit or off Ding hit, full swing or partial swing, etc.

    Downwind shots won't spin as much as upwind shots. Shots that land on a green that slopes against the line of  ball flight will back up a lot more than shots that land on a green that slopes with the line of  ball flight .

    You will get the most spin shooting against the wind, dialing in full backspin on the ball, and landing on a down slope that is facing you. You get the least spin shooting with the wind dialing in top spin on the ball, and landing on a down slope that is facing away from you.

    Kinda sorta but the numbers are irrelevant added together. The 3.5 says that club can make a ball spin. The 2.0 says the ball can be spun. How much it does is up to you to figure out by playing the combination. Then you can use the 5.5 total as a reference point. Switch to a 3.0 spin ball and see what you get for 6.5, and so on.

    Thanks for the responses

    So are you saying the max spin I could get would be my club spin only if the ball spin matched it?

    When I look at purchasing equipment or balls I alllways wonder if like attributes have the same weight with clubs as with balls.

    I realize a great many things can effect any attribute of clubs and or balls but what about  meter speed for instance.

    are all these the same?

    club = 3 ball = 2 total 5

    club =4  ball =1 total  5

    club = 2 ball = 3 total 5

    Thanks Tim

    or another way to put it [im pretty sure im right on this] is a clubs spin rating has some what more influence on total spin you get compared to the balls spin rating.  an added benefit of club spin rates is once you buy them thats it,where as for ball spin you must KEEP buying them. gl2u

    club =4  ball =1 total  5

    Good example to show you how irrelevant adding those numbers is. A club with a meter speed of 4 is slow. A ball with a meter speed of 1 is fast. So, in effect, the club wouldn't be as slow as that number, more like a 3.  :-)

    @fitz-The whole premise is based on a club's ability to impart spin on the ball and on the ball's ability to react to it. That's all the numbers show, the strength of what you're measuring. Mixing different numbers definitely yields different results and those ratings help you figure out what's best for you.

    or yet another way to put it.... i would think a 4 spin rating on clubs and one spin rating on balls would give some what more total spin than a 4 spin rating ball and a one spin rating clubs.
