I recently turned legend and to be honest, the extra length from the tees hasn't been as game destroying as I expected.  My average has gone back up of course but it stayed under 70 and is now 66.09, I seem to recall turning master being more difficult.

I think it's fair enough to have longer tees for legends, we're expected to be more experienced and able to hit the ball close from further away, not to mention putt well.  I lost 2 matchplay games to legends while I was a 61 something TM because both those guys could hit the ball close and sink 90% of putts.  They also had great short game skills for when it went a bit wrong.  I had the better average but they were better players, even from legend tees.

To want to stay a TM just to have an advantage off the tee is missing the point of the game.

You are so right!!!  I'm a TM and got there by staying off Kiawah and St Andrews and playing Oakmont and Congressional, and now St Georges.  Since I was a TP I could hit -4+ on Kiawah and St Andrews almost with my eyes closed.  When I went back and looked at some of the Legend scores, it seems so many of them got there on Kiawah and St Andrews and now playing the tougher courses is a bit challenging.  When I make Legend it'll be off the tougher courses so I am better prepared to be a Legend.  Playing those tough courses at 2-5 under makes 6-8 under on Kiawah and St Andrews pretty routine, even without the R-11.  You get to Legend by being a great golfer, and keeping the challenge to get better is important to me.  So if I gotta hit from 50 yards back to increase the challenge, so be it.  And those days when I get my backside handed to me by a Master or Tour Pro, it's usually because I did'nt hit the fairways and I could'nt make a putt.  BTW, when they play with me they have to shoot Tournament greens instead of Very Fast so it's no cakewalk for them either.

Having said all that, I play almost every day with Legends.  They don't have any problem hitting the fairway, they hit the greens in regulation for the most part, and they don't get upset that I use an R9 and 2.0s.   They complain mostly about the green speed.  Putting is the most difficult thing for them as well as myself.  Whenever I play with them, I have to putt Legend greens as well.  The putts have to be almost 40% less force, the breaks are exaggerated, and the cup seems smaller as the putts don't just fall in from the side and they routinely lip out.  However, it doesnt matter how long you are off the T-box, or how many times you it the GIR...if you can't putt, you're toast.  So with all the folks who are upset about the equipment, I say work on your putting and you'll continue to score well.

As a side note, I often tee off with a 3 wood to practice my mid-to-long irons so I am used to it when I reach Legend.  As I watch my Legend buddies, I see their approach shots are very often with a wedge even from 20-50 yards behind me on the T-box (they all use the R-11 and a bag full of Clevelands) so not sure what the big deal is with the T-boxes being further back.  When I play as a Legend, I want it to be because I can shoot well from anywhere, on any course and it just doesnt matter who's playing with what clubs, just as the Legends I play with do.  And for the most part, they have a lot of class while playing with us lower level/tier guys and help us get better every day.   I'm not in a hurry to make Legend...I'm not that good yet.  But when I do, I want to be as good as my pals, and be the coach and menter they are to me and our other friends.  Thanks for listening.

I could not agree with you more.  I am a legend, and I play people that are Masters with a great deal of advantage over me.  Most of these players play alt shot and ctth games. And when they play stroke games they sandbag.

I think that they should just do away with the tiers all together.  and make everyone shoot from the long tees.  Since most masters and TM have the exact same equipment that we do.

WGT has really managed to *** the game up big time.  There is no more fun playing like it use to

I reached Tour Master at level 58. (I was at Master at 42, Tour pro at 30 something, and pro in the teens). Pretty much everyone I play with has better equipment than me because I've advanced rapidly.

Since the difference between TM and Master is negligible, I expect I'll be at legend fairly soon, (I play tourney and championship greens regularly in Ready-Go tournaments and the tee boxes haven't changed).

When I reach legend, I expect it will come around level 65-70 which means, with the parabolic increase in XP necessary to level up, it will be months before I'm not playing with inferior equipment..

My putter, I got  in the teens, (I think). My irons and wedges in the forties, my 3w (which I don't usually have because I usually use 4 wedges), in the 40s somewhere, and my driver at level 58.

Little old ladies out-drive me, school children out-drive me, but I still advance because I am always getting better, throwing darts, learning the nuances, playing smart.

I may not have a 400 yd drive under my belt, but I believe I will be competitive, in fact successful, at any tier, even with lesser equipment.

Having a fast car doesn't make you a good driver, having the newest gadget doesn't mean you know how to use it, and having the best clubs doesn't make you a good golfer.

I'm not denying there are sandbaggers and other injustices out there, but that's life. You navigate them as best you can and you always try to be better than them.

Whether it's  a 2mph headwind on a level green from 75 yds, or a 30 mph crosswind and a 35' elevation change from 175 yds, I can still put the ball inside of 10'. I know the shot.

The way I see it, a hack with R11s (to be absurd) still only has an advantage over me on 1, (maybe 2), holes. Usually par fives I can't reach in two. Even then, the hack had better make his eagle putt because I'm damned sure going to drop my approach within a yard or two for an easy birdie.

You can give someone a rocket launcher, a magnetic ball, and an iron cup; I still think I can win.

    Sidenote:

    Steelers75:
Matter-of-factly, you've no clue what it's like for Legends until you're there yourself.

As an interesting point of grammar, you only contract "you have" when "have" is past tense, e.g. "You've won the lottery," or, "you've advanced to legend tier"

You never contract "you have" when "have" is possessive, e.g. "You've no clue", or, "You've herpes".

The most common misusage is both incorrect and redundant; "You've got..." e.g. "You've got to be kidding me", or, "You've got bad grammar". "Have" and "got" mean the same thing.

I don't know why I felt the need to mention that, but there it is.

    WGTicon:

First of all, I love your puppy. Such a good looking girl. :)

Here is the thing, I fully sympathize with you. I played STA back 9 with a friend last night in practice mode and posted nice 27. It was nice going back to the old green speed/hole lengths.

But, here is the thing: if you are asking equity, then you are asking basically a 300 driver, which would make longest tees play same as master tees. The problem there is, then there is no difference between tiers, since both will have same distances to the hole just teeing off from different locations. Whats the point of being master then>?

I know you are frustrated and sometimes I am too. I have put some nasty numbers on some holes recently and that never happened off master tees, but I think that;s why you are a legend, thats why the low score you post earn you respect.

    Good luck

    -wgticon

I know you won't 'level the playing field' and I understand your point of view - I (now) don't worry about having tees beyond other tiers and am happy with the reasons for this.

Maybe you could consider the few holes that make it 'unfair' - (if unfair is the right terminology here) and move legend tees forward a bit, its the ones where as a Legend you can't compete on, the holes every other tier can get on the green in two with a headwind, and has a birdie opportunity, but a Legend can only lay up and hope for par at best.

It seems the sandbaggers can on most holes drive and wedge, especially as they get the best equipment by leveling up not tiering up, I don't want to be able to do that, but if I do play someone and they can drive, wedge then have birdie chance, the worst I'd like to be able to do is compete and that would  mean drive, long iron birdie putt, not drive. wood, wedge, putt for par
