Individual freedom must remain the first, middle and last points on my compass.  Guess argue all day how well capitalism has served that or not, but on the whole I do believe it's the best of a bad lot

Just to make this clear. I'm not saying socialism is better or that I like it more. I prefer my freedom and I'm more than capable enough to succeed in capitalism. But the economical standards of living were overall better in socialism. Would I want it back, along with the "bad stuff"? Hell no!

As for politics, I've given up hope on total honesty and zero corruption in politics looooong ago. However I do expect one thing from any leader. And that is enough sense to know, one needs to graze a cow in order to milk it. But at present, there are many people in politics, whos 1st impulse is to barbecue the poor cow ;-)

Industrial revolution we had not dissimilar issues.  Globilisation is simply bringing much of that back.  In the end capitalism / democracy won out in the the old world order.  Many in the west also had a substantially better standard of living in those days v what was elsewhere............Left to their own devices big biz will milk the cow.  Mixed economy veering way more entrepreneurial with proper safety nets is somehow where we need to start heading in the world order that now exists..................

What are you on about, now? Jure, Doc and Jim were discussing political viewpoints...Are you referring to that topic?

Jure,  it was an excellent post I couldn't agree more with most of it.  I just want to argue that what instinctively feels right maybe isn't.

    mkrizan86:
I would describe myself as (very) liberal democrat, with some deviations (for instance, I would fully support the death penalty for child molesters, medieval style).

Others may want to add terrorists, then mass murderers, then....... you just end up with a death penalty.  The worst crimes often carry the biggest risk of an unsafe conviction too, something like:   The heinousness of the facts alone can make it more likely that the jury will ignore reasonable doubts and return a guilty verdict. Releasing a defendant who is probably guilty (but not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt) of a brutal slaying is much more difficult than releasing someone who is probably guilty of only a misdemeanor.

I think we (Countries) should make sure we have the ability to make sure these people, when caught, are never a danger to children again without resorting to killing.

    On a happier note:

For me, there simply was no other choice, it was "politics as usual" or play the wild card.

This is what's most galling about the present state of affairs-my future is predicated on a wild card. I stand to lose what I gained in the past 8 years and at my stage in life, that's crushing.

    We were moving forward...............   :-(

YJ, while I can certainly commiserate with your  viewpoint, we're at 180 on this one. Of course, we reason from  personal expectations of an unknown factor. Let's hope for positive change.

I fully understand your point, Alan. Regarding "the happier note", very nice pic and I'm fairly certain I can see my building on this photo, I live less than 2km away (top right quadrant of this pic). Nice pic of the old city centre.

Wine, women and song and we all get along. Just refer to the old vid of Strange Magic dancing. Now that is world peace and harmony.
